I’m not subscribing to WSJ so I can’t read this but are all these figures working the same hypothetical job? Because there is a difference between a $25K job and a $200K one. If the work/hours/qualifications are the same then fine, we’re petty dicks. But there is something called a job market and if I’m busting my ass in an 80 hour a week job and my co-workers are earning double, yeah, I’m pretty fucking pissed off.

But is that the fault of your co-workers? Seems silly to spite them for something that would presumably be the fault of your employer and to an extent yourself.

I’m not sure why this always works, but lmgtfy (let me google that for you, if you’ve never sarcastically been told that) will eliminate almost all pay to enter newspaper blocks. So just go to lmgtfy.com, enter the WSJ link, or whatever other newspaper, and it will handle the rest.

Makes perfect sense. Your income is one of the ways we ascertain our value in a tribal group. Being top dog of your group is better then being bottom dog even if you end u being bigger. Better to be king of hell then a slave in heaven.

I hate that people use wolf pack analogies. Wolf packs are really complex and it’s not nearly as simple as alpha v. zeta.

Humans are related to the asshole POS primates who just want to fuck everyone else up all of the time to show how dominate we are. We shouldn’t insult the noble wolf by comparing our behavior to them.

This is obviously why people barely making more than minimum wage attack those who want to raise the Federal minimum.

Yup. I’ve seen several memes complaining that fast food workers want $15 an hour but some EMTs and firefighters only make $11. Now, the basic idea that trained emergency personnel should earn more than burger flippers is one I agree with. But the meme has some obvious logical problems:

      1. It’s an apples to oranges comparison because the high cost of living cities where a $15 minimum wage is most talked about are certainly paying their paramedics and firefighters a lot more than $11 an hour.

      2. Any paramedic or firefighter actually making $11 an hour would get their pay raised to $15, too, at a bare minimum. These people act like the new minimum wage would only apply to stereotypically low-skilled jobs and not any job currently making less. Going from $11 to $15 is over a 35% raise - it would have a huge impact on the lives of those underpaid emergency personnel. But these memes imply that they’re better off making $11 as long as others below them are kept in their place making $7, instead of everyone making $15 (even if you ignore the likelihood that they’d be paid even more than $15, because why take a more difficult and dangerous job for the same pay).

Interestingly enough if you work in the government, or similar work structure, you get paid by rank no matter what the job. A cook in the Army gets exactly the same pay as a potentially more dangerous job as that of an infantryman if the same rank.

Did they ask the political affiliation of the half that were so spiteful and foolish that they threw away $50k so that they could make $25k more than their co-workers? Or shall we hazard a guess?

It’s not even a guess at this point. More like a thoroughly educated assumption.

That's why I'm team Bernie. I think we should all make 25k.

C’mon, though, that can’t be the way the study really worked. If it measured on a scale of 1-10 “how happy would you be if” then I could see it.

How happy would I be if I made 50k and my coworkers made 25k? Pretty happy, because I’d feel that my hard work was being rewarded, and that I was excelling in my field. 10

How happy would I be if I made 100k and my coworkers made 200k? Pretty crappy, because I’d feel like I wasn’t appreciated, and others who don’t work as hard as I do (considering my present coworkers) were being treated like they work twice as hard and are twice as deserving. 1

It doesn’t follow that I’d rather make 50k than 100k. That wasn’t a part of the question.

Ha! Sorry. I’m actually in a strangely rational mood. I wonder if I’m getting sick.

Usually I’m the first person to rant about others making more than me and get pissed. Especially since my company keeps bringing back crappy former employees and making them Directors. AAARRRGGGHHH.

Mark Ames, Taibbi’s ex partner in crime basically nailed this in We, The Spiteful, even though it has to do with electoral issues rather than money.

We are a shitty lot, straight up.

This explains the pay gap. And the frothing wailing against any suggestion that it should be fixed.
