However, among children, mortality has been falling more quickly in poorer areas with the result that inequality in mortality has fallen substantially over time. This is an important result given the growing literature showing that good health in childhood predicts better health in adulthood.

I have to agree with science on this one: Not dying as a child has a positive correlation with healthy adulthood.

      Those studies are flawed.

As a matter of fact, 100% of adults living today are healthier than those that died as children.

Yeah, but baby people! I mean, you can fit, like, 7 baby people into the space of one adult person.

And we keep the baby people contained! When was the last time you saw a baby person by themselves just standing on the sidewalk, chilling in the middle of moving pedestrian traffic and fucking up the flow?

When it comes to discussions of mortality rates, it seems like all we hear these days is “middle-aged white Americans are dying more.” Okay, fine—but here’s the good news.

    That wasn’t the good news?

The terrifying thing about those high mortality rates is they’re correlated to the rise of populist demagogues. Vast swaths of uneducated and unemployed people with few prospects and an impending death aren’t likely to have no impact whatsoever. And those are the exact groups with the highest mortality rates.

“Wow, middle-aged whites are dying faster now”

Awww man, I wanted a long, drawn-out death... showered with morphine and sympathy. Not a quick, never-knew-what-hit-me, death :(

Yeah, they are having long drawn out deaths from self-administered opiates and alcohol. (Seriously.)

The demographic landscape of this country in 20-30 years when the majority of Boomers are gone will be unlike anything America has ever seen. I am not a Boomer, I’m Gen X, so I hope I’ll live to see it.

We also show that there have been stunning declines in mortality rates for African Americans between 1990 and 2010, especially for black men.

I tried to find in the paper a good explanation for why this was thought to be the case and found nothing, but maybe I missed it. The most obvious though was the overall decrease in violent crimes, but the paper specifically says that due to the low overall rate of crime during that time period in general, they don’t think that is the cause.

A few other things are tossed out as ideas in the paper, such as declines in HIV/AIDs mortality, declines in smoking, where but they don’t seem to actually explore them in much depth so it’s hard to understand if/why those would have had an outsized impact on black men.

      Interesting stuff, nonetheless.

Ah, but what kind of world will those babies live in? At least half of them are going to wish they’d died at birth.

This is why we need an abortion clinic in every high school.
