I have very limited knowledge of fetuses/pregnancy, so does anybody know how much painkiller passes through to the fetus via the placenta? And how fast? Also how do you measure painkiller efficacy in fetuses? Isn’t it already hard enough to do with adult humans? HOW DOES THIS WORK

    EDIT: I found this article:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/govbeat/...

Just to make sure, Olszewski would prefer that fetuses are anesthetized directly during an abortion. He says that doctors can readily learn how to use an ultrasound-guided needle to deliver a cheap dose of painkillers to the fetus. “If a doctor is providing abortion, they could do the anesthetic themselves,” he said. “It’s not an amazing skill.”

    I may be crazy................I’m pretty sure.....that abortion providers....and anesthesiologists....are not...the same.....*cringes to death*

That’s gonna be a real head-scratcher when the fetus is like the size of a lima bean, or smaller.

It’s just the way of conservatives acting like a fetus, which is a clump of cells with no idea of its existence, is the same thing as a woman. Whether that be a teenaged woman or a 46 year old. The fact that there are people fighting for the rights of a cluster of cells that resembles a human, but can’t accept that a woman should have the same rights to life and liberty is BS.

If more women had access to birth control or abortion it would be entirely possible that the “welfare state” that conservatives also rail against would be reduced. Give women access to affordable birth control and reduce abortions. But they would rather women just be treated like incubators than anything else.

This is the world republicans envision. A return to the days before Roe v. Wade. They can’t make that happen directly just yet, so they edge around the corners with the explicit purpose of difficulty, harassment and humiliation. If they could pass a law requiring women seeking an abortion to leap through two purple hoops and dance the Macarena in slow-motion for a week before qualifying for the procedure, they would.

    Vote, people. Vote.

As someone who, while personally uncomfortable with abortion, is a fervent believer in a woman’s right to choose, I was under the impression that abortions already required painkillers or some degree of anesthesia. Is this just creating a totally redundant law designed to make women extra guilty or something?

From the article: Many women already receive anesthesia or painkillers if they have surgical abortions, and those drugs naturally pass to the fetus.

I actually think that this is an intentionally vague law so that there would be room to prosecute the doctors (and possibly the patients) for “violations”.

The Republican Party showing once again their “compassionate conservatism”. Take a woman who wants to be pregnant and foist the horrors of them dictating how she should terminate a pregnancy. I have no words.

    Actually, I do.....

I hope every one of them feels pain for the rest of their lives. I hope at the end of the day they hear nothing but screaming. I hope their houses cave in, their wives cheat on them and their kids turn out to be opinionated/gay. There isn’t enough words in the English language for me to express my disgust. I fucking hate them all.

P.S. Don’t tell me you are a “fiscal” conservative. No, you are an asshole of staggering order if you only care about a small tax break when womens lives are on the line. Hell, I have more respect for right wing nut jobs who actually believe their shit than asswipes who are willing to overlook everything the GOP does and still cling to the Republican party for monetary reasons. Just fucking die.

Yes. My husband lost a job site in High Level today. He was not up there, but his crew was evacuated and it looks like it’s all just getting destroyed. And that’s the small fire. The pics from Fort Mac look like Hell. Literal Hell.

Shocker! Laws made to prevent women from making the choice that they have to live with for forever. How about when a dude impregnates a woman who then wants an abortion that we start regulating their sperm or their actual obligation to a child?

You want a woman to think it’s a better option to keep her pregnancy, let’s start with maternity leave. Or sexism in general in the work place? How about it stop being an issue that a woman might decide to have a child whenever she chooses to? Because when a man makes that decision does he get punished for it? Does a younger man who is married assumed to leave for parental leave (oh wait, it’s also still on the woman for that) and therefore his job will suffer?

Honestly, this whole issue makes me so damn mad that I have a hard time ever making my argument coherent. There are so many ways in which women get punished for the fact that they presumably can have kids. I don’t want kids. Part of that is because I know I am likely to have a high risk pregnancy, but part is because I just don’t want kids. So why do I get punished for that (if I chose to have an abortion knowing the risks to myself and the fetus) but the next woman gets punished for having kids because she took time off of her job to pop out a human being?

Because you have cut straight to the core of the matter. We as women deserve to be punished because we are the lesser sex. These men are just putting us in our place. With the recession, it seemed more women were getting or keeping jobs than men. More women were earning more than the man in their family. I think I read there are more women than men in college. It’s time to squash us and barefoot and pregnant is a good start. They don’t give a damn if the fetus feels pain.

As part of the law, doctor’s would be required to tell women that “substantial medical evidence” shows the fetus may feel pain during the abortion, even though there isn’t anything of the kind.

Oh, I see. You not only want me to administer a medically unnecessary and potentially unsafe drug, you also want me to LIE to the patient as to why it’s being given. I guess they don’t grasp how breathtakingly unethical this is for doctors, huh? Wait, they probably do, they just don’t give a shit! Cool, cool.

You guys seem to have no problem making shit up, but doctors tend to take a pretty dim view of LYING TO OUR PATIENTS.

I wonder if she is accepting patients! I had her by chance at a Medicaid clinic (I'm unemployed at the moment) where, I assume, she works for free (she is so cool!) sometimes. But I'm sure you could google her practice! She's sort of famous here for being outspoken in this debate but I'm not sure whether that would translate to professional popularity, you know? This is Utah...

    Oh for fucks sake indeed!

Oh noes, the tiny not-person might feel pain, we don’t mind if actual people hurt and suffer though. So biologically speaking, even if we assume a fetus has the neurological ability to feel pain in a similar manner to a full formed human, pain receptors are oxygen hogs and require a nice supply of blood. At such a size it has mere microseconds of oxygen, in case of a severe rupture, to feel pain.

There’s enough actual pain and suffering by fully formed humans, young and old, out there to focus on. The causes are real, and myriad. Time to redirect all that altruistic energy to the provable. Step outside yourself, put faith in the visible- help your brothers and sisters.
