When your first response to “how has your wife changed you” is “well, she gives me a lot of pleasure” ... that is not a healthy dynamic.

And he seems a little confused about who exactly changed her life by adopting her from Korea.

You know, feeding and clothing a child, helping them get an education, experience the world - that sounds a lot like parenting. Except the whole creeping-on-you-when-you-were-a-child.

That the first thing you do is talk about all you’ve done for her, in response to a a question not at all about that, makes pretty clear the fucked up “I saved you, you owe me” dynamic here. Talking about her fucked up early childhood only makes it more clear how this all happened.

Also it kind of steps on all his attempt over the years to insist he played no paternal role in her life whatsoever so that's why their relationship isn't wrong.

By the way, he was in a documentary called Wild Man Blues almost 20 years ago, and he had exactly the same narrative about himself and his relationship with Soon Yi (describing her eating out of trash cans, pointing out how he allows her to travel the world, etc.). Nice to see that his view of their relationship, and the power dynamic therein, hasn’t matured at all in two decades.

I don’t like Woody Allen films (or really, movies in general) so I like to pretend that I’m on some high moral platform and say “Oh i don’t watch his movies due to the fact that he’s repulsive.”

I saw Annie Hall and loved it but it’s hard to watch a lot of his older movies where it’s almost always some beautiful young girl just head over heels in love with him, especially knowing his history. But even if I hadn’t known his history, what exactly is it they’re supposed to find appealing about him? He’s funny, yes, but he’s always so whiny and self-loathing I just end up rolling my eyes.

You’re saying how you changed her. How has she changed you?

(Allen pauses.) Well, she’s given me a lot of pleasure.

Hannah Montana was a great show. My kids are just old enough for it now so I’ve started watching it with them — it’s leagues above the other Disney shows on today.

The other Disney shows now are beyond horrible. Cheap jokes based on stereotypes, always pushing the “pretty dumb girl” as the cool, desirable one.

Horrible, I can’t bear them. He’s also right, Miley was great in that show. Especially compared to the ones they have on now. God save us all from the cast of Jessie.

ETA: this is Nick, not Disney, but losing iCarly was another blow to the tolerable kid targeted television landscape.

I know I’m different from when I was 20 to now. I grew up mentally and emotionally. I don’t know what it says about him that he thinks he still the same he was at that age.

Because he’s a Narcissist and they really do stay the same mental age forever (and they don’t realize that other people don’t).

According to this memorable and fascinating digest of the whole family, Mia Farrow and her family alternately told interviewers she was learning disabled and too dumb to know what she was doing with Woody and that she was a sociopath who seduced Allen? It sounds like she’s been surrounded by assholes her whole life.

Cosign 100%. Farrow has been an inconsistent and unreliable source for years. Which is a shame b/c it really sabotaged Dylan’s case.

I remember reading that linked post and the same quote from Mia stood out to me once again:

“She was on the streets in Korea when she was captured and brought to the state orphanage.”

      Captured.

Mia, Woody — these people talk about Soon Yi like she was literally a stray dog. It’s just a fundamentally bizarre foundation on which to build any kind of a relationship and I think it explains a lot.

I mean of course Woody is a gross awful human. Mia is less awful. But she’s still awful. It is just compared to Woody’s grossness that she seems like the normal parent.

    1.) He is creepy. I can’t even.

2.) Mia Farrow and Woody Allen never married. They were partners for over a decade and he is the father (via legal adoption) of a couple of her kids, but it is not factual to refer to Farrow as Allen’s “wife.”

He’s the legal biological father of Ronan, nee Satchel (though there are rumors, of course), not the adoptive father.
