“[T]hese characters must be crafted thoughtfully and better reflect the full diversity of the LGBT community[.]”

    (emphasis mine)

For Pete’s sake—the full diversity of the LGBT community? First off, what does that even mean? As I understand it, one of the main ethos of that community is that it’s inclusive of a necessarily expansive and indefinite class of persons—in essence, anyone who isn’t cisgender or heterosexual. So how many character is the next Star Wars supposed to include to cover this spectrum? (even if you were to make every character with lines in the next one a member of the LGBTQ community—would there even be enough characters already in the movie to cover the “full diversity”?)

And what’s more, is there any film or television show that can be said to “reflect the full diversity of the LGBT community”?

It just means they don’t want the character(s) to be a walking stereotype.

I think they are saying more like “there are a BUNCH of ways to represent this group” by way of moving away from just CIS/HET representation. Science fiction doesn’t have to align with our paradigms, that’s what’s always been so exciting for LGBTQ folk (and minorities in general) about sci-fi... And you see it all the time in the books, but very few of the movies show that.

I mean, just look how people shit a brick about Finn’s race! What, there are PEOPLE OF COLOR OMFG WHAT?

Why couldn’t one of our aliens come from a species where they are.. Say, all lesbians!? Or one that they choose their gender as a rite of passage to adulthood? Or have Finn be black and bisexual (it’s like minority lotto there). Or explore the asexual aspects of androids. Or or or.

Really, anyone who reads sci if could come up with a million plausible, fun, inclusive ways to have a non CIS/het character. And having SOME representation in this film, more in others, THEN we start to see more of the whole community of LGBTQ.

I can never get fully on-board with stuff like this. Having fans dictate art/cinema/creative endeavors is one of those “don’t do it” things. So now is there a giant shadow cast over Star Wars because it, specifically, has been given the burden of fulfilling something these fans want it to do? Especially when you consider that it’s already been written (episode 8 anyway).

I just have decidedly mixed feelings about placing what amounts to an ultimatum at the feet of a single project, with the implication being that if they DON’T do that thing, they will have let everyone down and will have to live down a stigma. I don’t think that’s fair to art. (and it’s fine if you don’t think Star Wars is art...but it is, just as all cinema is to some degree)

I don’t know. I think I may not have articulated what I’ve intended very well.

I tend to agree. While blockbusters should incorporate more diversity (and the new Star Wars has done this in other respects) it seems unfair to put a very specific demand on a particular franchise, especially one where with one notable exception (Han and Leia) the characters have been played largely asexual.

But I wonder if they’re just using Star Wars because it’s high profile and will get more attention, and really are just putting the industry on notice that there’s a demand for LGBT characters in big movies so maybe they can incorporate it more organically in new franchise that would be better suited to it. If they just made a general statement about wanting more LGBT characters in high profile movies they probably would have gotten less attention.

I can see where you’re coming from. I remember during the time I was playing World Of Warcraft, there were always calls for Blizzard to include some monument or character in game for whatever the tragedy of the moment was, usually when a natural disaster would occur. Of course if Blizz didn’t then they were soul less monsters.

I guess gays and lesbians also want to watch their sexuality be depicted in an awkward fashion in a Star Wars movie.

Only if George Lucas writes in the dialogue.

Jerry: Oh Steve I love you so much, I was lost without you!

Steve: I.... God why is there fucking dust everywhere! I fucking hate dust!

Is JJ Abrams still involved with the movies? Isn’t the next one being directed by a new person? How involved is JJ with the next two films, and all the other.... stuff... they plan on filming? 8 is already filming so that script is done. What about 9, is that done too? Am I going to be late for work bc I’m just on Jez and haven’t even showered yet? I think we all know the answer to THAT question. :(

After the tantrum bigots threw at Old Navy this past week I really hope it is Finn & Poe. I don’t think Rey’s character needs a love interest. She’s a strong, resourceful asskicker who’s got bigger fish to fry. I’d also be fine with Darth Maul making an appearance only to meet a nice fella and finally get a happy ending.

Because I think Rey has too much to do and it could only serve as a mild distraction at best or unnecessary side plot at worst. She’s got to train, learn about who she is and where she comes from, help Luke re-establish the Jedi order while fighting The First Order, she and Luke will have to contend with much more powerful enemies in Snoke and Kylo Ren. Finn and Poe while absolutely vital, will really just be agents for Leia and the resistance. There’s a lot more time for them to organically begin to care about each other as they’re working together to fight the first order in what I assume will be a rebel alliance / guerrilla unit now that the resistance is on the back foot after the destruction of Hosnian Prime.

Given the situations the characters were in, how do we know none of them are gay?

I mean, you’re struggling to take down a weapon that can essentially wipe out a star system, there’s no time to look at the camera and say “by the way I’m gay.”.

just let me be in the movie and make me Rey’s girlfriend.

and then just like it happens all the time, Daisy Ridley will fall in love with me IRL and we’ll live happily ever after.

    easy peasy.
