      Any time I read anything about bathroom policing I get that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach because I am preparing to read about an act of violence perpetuated against an LGBT person. It’s just a matter of time before it happens and it makes national news.

      It was obvious to me that SSM wasn’t the end of it. LGBT still has a long way to go. You can get fired in most states. Trans people such as myself get murdered in extremely high numbers.

      So what you’re saying is this is all leading up to a law where a man is allowed to enter the women’s bathroom as long as he thinks he saw another man enter? This will surely lead to protecting the fragile women and will not lead to a man following in a man who thinks he saw another man enter.

      I’m being sarcastic but I’m scared because I think it’s possible that some people out there will actually think it’s a good idea.

      There is speculation that the Texas lege will be looking at some bathroom laws next year (our lege only meets for 6 months every other year). We’re an open carry state now. Who knows what kind of fuckery might happen!

    I was having a conversation with my mother about the bathroom bills. She agrees that people should be allowed in the bathroom of their identified gender, but she asked me what my response would be if a man walked into the women’s bathroom. I said I’d think they were confused and accidentally walked in the wrong place. She nearly lost her shit thinking I wasn’t being cautious enough. What, am I immediately supposed to assume they’re criminals?!

      What I would think would depend on the circumstances. I might think he went through the wrong door. Depending on the look on his face and who else was in there, I might think he was after a particular woman. I have never seen a man go into a bathroom to attack a random woman, but I have seen plenty of women hide in bathrooms because some creep wouldn't leave her alone or her boyfriend was being an asshole, so it wouldn't be a leap that the asshole boyfriend or creep would follow the crying woman.

      Tell yer ma to never go to France. A lot of public bathrooms are mixed. I waited outside a gas station bathroom until I thought my bladder might explode because I didn’t realize right away that it was mixed gender. Nothing happened when I went in except, you know, relief.

      This shit is concerning-I don’t understand why people feel like they have to police other people’s style like this. When I was in my 20s I kept my hair short. My physique is very earth-mother-loves-pasta, and there isn’t any mistaking me for a man, but even so, my grandpa (who I hadn’t seen since I was a child) had to say “oh, is that OtherKate? I thought it was a boy” like he was clever or some shit. And I’m not even truly gender non-conforming...people are people, people, let it go...

      Yep. We need to stand together. See some guy lurking outside the ladies, waiting to harass anyone he doesn’t find feminine enough, call the cops on him. “There is a guy trying to get into the women’s bathroom and he is making me and all the other women very frightened.” Bonus points if you can sound as feminine and vulnerable as possible on the phone. This new law guarantees they have to respond!
