Are there really no comments on this yet (or am I being Kinja’d)? Talk about proving her point.

I was JUST about to post that.

This is some meta-irony right here.

I kept thinking “surely it’s a Kinja error,” but apparently not.

She is a gift, seriously. A brilliant, badass gift.

“When folks say that they’re fighting on behalf or advocating for the protection of girls and women, they’re usually speaking about a very specific girl,” says Mock. “She’s usually not trans. She’s usually perceived to be straight. She is usually the epitome of respectability. She hasn’t engaged in sex work. She is white and/or as close to whiteness as possible. We create and recreate these hierarchies within our own communities as well, the right kind of victim, the one that we will rally and fight for and advocate on behalf of.”

Her perfect victim comments were spot on as well. Holtzclaw was able to operate so long and so many victims because of this and that is not an anomaly.

I think the only part I’m able to confidently comment on is this. No one is ever the perfect victim. But holy shit does the inverted pyramid/funnel drain fast when someone is POCand/orLGBT. It’s a quick drawing funnel and most of the world would appreciate if those stories or those accounts or those victims would just find another acceptable column.

I imagine being a black transwoman is living life with the setting on expert level difficulty. What I’m saying is, Janet Mock is gonna get the highest score possible in this game called life.

not only living black and trans and feminine, but also OUT and as an activist when it would be easy for her to take advantage of passing privilege and sit the tough stuff out. i can pass as cis, and while i hate when people won’t acknowledge my identity, it sure is nice to not have to be THEE genderqueer person all the time. she just does it all so well!

Every time I listen to Mock speak, I end up searching for a non-sarcastic, genuine applause gif and am at a loss.

People have remarked on the lack of comments - personally, as someone who has written, published and advocated on transgender issues (particularly around transwomen and violence, particularly police assults), it feels like you’re screaming into a void. People nod, they agree and empathise, but then they don’t do anything. People agree that it’s a tragedy and a disgrace, but they don’t do anything. The very brave, very outspoken transwomen I know put a lot on the line in outing themselves in order to campaign on these issues - they’re denied jobs, housing, access to welfare, are assulted, raped, forced by necessity into sex work, mocked and vilified, all while cishet and cisLGB people talk about progress and equal rights and ignore transpeople (and particularly transpeople of colour). LGB support groups routinely exclude transpeople, particularly in the workplace. Women’s support groups routinely exclude transwomen, often on the basis of TERF claims that they aren’t real women, or because they once had male priviliage - as if they doesn’t put them in a unique position to discuss the difference between once having male privilage and then being denied it.

People who are not transgender or POC often back away from the topic, because they say they’re unqualified to comment. But, as people, I think we all have a duty to stand up for one another, and as a non-trans cismale and white person, I am in a place where I don’t jeapordise my life and my career by speaking up on these issues. Particularly within the LGBTI community, I think the effort to conform to white cis hetronormative behaviour and appearances needs to end - particularly in places where marriage equality has been achieved, I think there is a responsibility to abandon the gender binary conforming cis het two people monogomous script that made us less threatening to the bigots, and actually admit that yes, we failed the transpeople who were such strong advocates for the whole community (eg: Stonewall white gay washing) and we need to do better.

Women like Janet Mock shouldn’t be so extraordinary in that they use their voices to advocate for positive change - we should all be doing that, and leanding support to her and other transpeople.

This is a wonderful event to publicize, Ms. Mock is right, I can’t think of ever hearing anything about the life experiences or struggles of black trans women.

Thank you for writing this article, and bringing attention to this event and this issue. The lack of comments on this post is startling.
