    XrdsAlum@ProfJeffJarvis, a parody account

This caught my eye yesterday, and I can understand why the real Jarvis would have this taken down. Esquire didn’t identify @ProfJeffJarvis as a parody account, and it’s so spot-on in its techno-libertarian nonsense that it took me until “Apple and Google, not with special interests” to see that it was.

It is strange that the real Jarvis, for all his buzzwords, isn’t familiar with the Streisand Effect.

I don’t understand how the Streisand effect is relevant here. You said that the original misled you but this has enough disclaimers that it shouldn’t mislead anyone, and the Streisand effect isn’t about whether correcting misinformation causes the original misinformation to propogate anyway. It’s about trying to get information suppressed bringing more attention to that information.

"The Innovation Party will be algorithm-first..." They already tried this in 2000, it failed, Al Gore came in second.

So, I know this is a totally hilarious parody and everything. But there actually is a good argument to be made for radically changing the way our representative democracy works in an age of instant, high-speed communication and information retrieval.

I don’t see any situation that wouldn’t end up with “voting” in this way becoming anything less than a meaningless show to make people feel like they’ve done something noteworthy and active. Who would be accountable for ensuring that Twitter votes (or whatever forum they use) would be counted correctly and accurately? Who is overseeing these decisions? Creating the polls? Writing the copy to ensure that it’s not biased? It’s a crap idea all around. Total crap. Not to say that some of these accountability issues don’t exist in our current voting process, but putting everything online would just serve to make our democratic process more flippant, make voters even less engaged in their roles in the process, and subject all of us to the whims of people’s ever-changing moods and thoughtless decision making. Total crap.

it must be stressed that @profjeffjarvis is, unlike Jeff Jarvis, both mildly self-aware and also not a gigantic whiny baby.

Was I supposed to find this biting & witty?

While I can’t disagree with the motive, mocking tech centric libertarianism should be considered a patriotic duty of any thinking American, this sort of fizzled with me while I read it.
