Why the hell do we have $34 billion worth of excess military grade weaponry just lying around, waiting to be distributed? Oh, right.

at the bottom of his backpack police recovered a gram and a half of marijuana. The police seized almost $1,000 from the young man, who was planning to use the money to purchase a lawnmower to start a business.

I can’t stop shaking my head at this (for how it highlights the disparities). This young man, enterprising and family-oriented, is arrested (a record will appear) for weed possession (which is one of the stumbling blocks to opening a weed business when it becomes legal, another win for white folks!). Secondly, the money they took will now have to replaced and if it's not, this young man will become indebted to the court system (the state) who will use the debt to continue to imprison him. Then they have the nerve to tell black folks that America has changed. That shit sounds like the shit sharecroppers had to endure. Unending and burdensome debt.

I posted this on a couple of articles, but it’s situations like this one that make me really glad Canada is moving towards marijuana legalization. I think drug laws in general hurt people more than they help.

Marijuana prohibition was specifically instituted to criminalize black people.

Cops are a gang with more guns and less accountability than other gangs.

Cops behave like this because just enough of white America wants them to.

If they didn’t, things would change.

That coupled with the large section of America that doesn’t comprehend the degree to which it’s happening or even believe it’s happening at all.

Even if 90% of the country thought it was wrong, we couldn’t fix it. You need the right 10% to be on board, and fixing the problem needs to be profitable to them.

It’s alarming how much the war on terror resembles, at least domestically, the war on drugs.

Black people have been aware and talking about this kind of treatment from police for centuries. This crap started with slavery and it hasn’t ended. The country noticed during the civil rights movement because new technology (tv screens) brought the violence into everyone’s living room. The world could see the truth and America was embarrassed. So things got a little better but it was still bad. Police/the government got better at not misbehaving too badly in front of television cameras. Now new technology (phone cameras) is bringing the same violent behavior to light again. It’s always happened. But now anyone can be a camera person and gather video evidence. I hope that things change a lot this time but I wish that the rest of America didn’t need video evidence before believing that the police systematically and brutally attack the Black community. I wish that other communities listened to us instead of discounting/ignoring our experiences.

I first read this as “Turn the lights off.”

And then I realized that was not at all how it was meant.

That was my first thought, too - that they were using psychological tactics against people they put in jail. Then I realized they were being horrible in a whole different way.

That’s a command straight from the group of people who get paid to protect us.

...if by “us” you mean “white people,” then I agree 100%.
