Normally I’m a huge fan of Hamilton Nolan, but he was way the fuck off the mark with this:

Fuck these pigs. Fuck them all. Fuck their families and their kids. Fuck anyone that even speaks to them like they are people. These are monsters. All of them. No solidarity for fucking evil fucks.

Or, if enough people start to feel this way, it can be a very productive attitude.

There’s no way the city of Cleveland and the Cleveland Police would continue to antagonize this family if they were not black. Kill their son, pay them some money, then belittle them about how to spend the money they got paid because you killed their son? Yeah, that doesn’t happen to non-black folks. Money.

Before they paid them the money, didn’t they first bill them for transporting the body of their dead son, or some other fuckery like that?

What is it with police unions being so tone deaf when it comes to situations like this?

Granted, this was a fake gun, but how about the police union lobby speak more about the proliferation of firearms in our society and not dump it in the lap of a dead 12-year-old child. Ohio is an open carry state. They should be pissed about that.

Several mistakes were made the day Tamir Rice died.

The pellet gun Rice had was designed to look like Colt model 1911. It even had the tactical rail in front of the trigger. (this allows for the installation of accessories like flashlights or laser sights. why does a pellet gun have this?) The model 1911 is favored by concealed carry advocates as it’s considered to have ‘stopping power’. That means, regardless of where you hit the target, they are going down. That’s not always the case with smaller calibers. The 1911 is .45 caliber. That’s a bullet that’s just .05" smaller than a .50 caliber. It’s a deadly round.

The pellet gun was missing the legally mandated orange barrel ring that allows it to be quickly identified as a toy. All toy guns are required to have them to show that they are harmless to prevent these types of shootings. Some BB and pellet guns aren’t required to have them because they fire projectiles and are considered dangerous. The pellet gun Rice had fired a .177 caliber pellet. It fires them with enough force that the gun can be used to kill squirrels at a range of 20-30 feet. While it won’t kill a person, they will and have broken the skin and caused serious injury.

Whose pellet gun was it? And why was a 12 year old able to get his hands on it and take it to a park?

Why did the police open fire just 2 seconds after arriving on scene?

Pellet guns like the one Rice had are designed primarily as target pistols. They allow someone to spend a day plinking soda cans or vicious pieces of paper without spending a fortune on ammunition. There is no reason they have to be replicas of actual weapons.

The only regulation to buy one of these is you have to be 18. There is no reason the frame can’t be made a different color to distinguish it from a real handgun.

Rice made a mistake bringing the pellet gun to the park. The police made the mistake of not fully evaluating the situation before opening fire. The owner of the pellet gun made the mistake of allowing Rice access to it.

But where the majority of the blame lies is with the manufacturer of the pellet gun. There is no reason they need to produce what is essentially a toy that fires dangerous projectiles that looks identical to an actual gun.

I don’t think that you’re wrong about that, but it doesn’t exactly release the police from any blame here.

And maybe also to cover the costs of therapy for the pain and anguish the cop(s) endured by having their actions reported by the media.

I read that statement as intentionally tone-deaf. As in not innocently tone deaf, but more along the lines of a deliberately sadistic taunt and a means of spitting on Tamir Rice’s family out of spite in the wake of them actually receiving financial recompense.

That statement comes across as darkly cruel to me, little more.

When cowboys were popular (I dunno..50s, 60s?) and 99% of boys carried BB and or cap guns without the neon orange tips did they get shot by cops all the time?

Something has changed though. When I was growing up, my brother had a very realistic looking toy gun. (We are black) Lots of other kids in the neighborhood did too. But I don’t ever remember 1) a kid getting shot by a cop because they thought the guns were real or 2) any adult being concerned that this could happen. Now, I’m talking 30+ years ago. I think things have become even worse in that time frame regarding police brutality. Ever younger children are seen as a threat-witness the young kids who act up in school, whom they call the cops on—that *never* happened when I was in school. For the cops to show up, you had to be doing something seriously illegal—drug dealing, have a real gun, stab someone, that sort of thing.

Um, yeah, sure. They got off easy for this unprovoked killing of a child. You’ve got to wonder: how high a level of privilege are they still enjoying if they think that it’s still a good idea to blame the dead child? Maybe the parents of the dead child can find a lawyer to sue them for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Maybe if you hit them over the head with a 2 x 4 enough times, someone who is in charge of writing the checks will get them to bloody stop shooting people for no reason!

That’s a good thought. But I would imagine they are tired of reliving the tragic loss of a child and want to finally find some closure. Cleveland citizens should and will attempt to instill much warranted change in Tamir's honor.

    The statement reads:

    “Media,

We have maintained from the onset this has been an absolute tragedy for the Rice family as well as our involved Officers and their families. Our hearts continue to be with them.

We can only hope the Rice family and their attorneys will use a portion of this settlement to help educate the youth of Cleveland in the dangers associated with the mishandling of both real and facsimile firearms. Something positive must come from this tragic loss. That would be educating youth of the dangers of possessing a real or replica firearm.

We look forward to the possibility of working with the Rice family to achieve this common goal.”

    1, Funky intro sentence...

    2. I’m curious as to what tragic loss the officers have suffered. Being publicly humiliated for their unjustified behavior has zero comparison to losing one’s own life.

    3. Carefully omitted, no accountability for the fact that the kid was shot down before he even had a chance to react. There was zero attempt to diffuse the situation.

    4. What about instead having the City of Cleveland attempting to hire competent staff, and not allowing people with documented history of issues to not have access to firearms?

Hell YES. How about some BASIC TRAINING that would keep officers from having to make split-second decisions like: 1) Is this an adult, kid, somewhere in between; 2) Is that a real gun? 3) Where is this gun (real or fake)? All these two chucklefucks had to do was pull up at any reasonable covering distance and get on the bullhorn “Show me your hands.” Oh yeah, I forgot, they already ARE trained to do that. They just fucking ignored their own training. That’s why you stop at a reasonable distance and get on the bullhorn, so you don’t have to come out guns blazing. Regardless of what wasn’t communicated by the dispatcher, there was NO REPORT of shots fired, person(s) down, hostages, etc. There was no fucking reason on this earth why these cops had to barrel up to the scene 10 feet away from Tamir Rice. All this focus on “what was reasonable in the .00002 seconds before they shot him?” misses this point entirely. Makes me sick.
