I know Samantha Bee is getting a lot of love, deservedly, but John Oliver is the top alum out of “The Daily Show”. His takedown of the George Zimmerman acquittal was only an appetizer. This guy is bent on making a difference. The way he goes after things that matter is arguably better than his mentor, Jon Stewart. Where Stewart constantly fought the same battle over and over, Oliver goes after a variety of issues and works to really educate his audience. Good for him.

While I would welcome that, I wonder if the weekly format allows him to do deeper research and lets him be more effective in his rants. I would definitely love to see him back on normal cable, although YouTube is great, the entirety of his show is much more than his weekly clips.

The plan has to include financial losses for the creditors and some sort of punishment for the political leaders and union leaders who supported the irresponsible financial malfeasance which birthed this situation. The citizens of Puerto Rico should not bear the effects of this bullshit.

One way or the other the citizens will have to bear the burden. The government won’t be able to provide the same level of services on reduced revenue.

I don’t know — you vote for bread, circuses and free lunches, and you bear some responsibility.

As a native of the island, it does not deserve to be rescued. This comes from years and years of a corrupt government system that the people don’t seem to mind. Puerto Rico had a myriad of opportunities in the past to at least begin a serious statehood conversation, but has always chosen to keep being labeled a “territory”. As a “territory” it needs to be allowed to implode and then a rebuilding can happen.

Really, it’s a long history of wasted opportunities, unwanted “help” from the mainland, and internal class-based conflicts. A great primer on the history of the island is the documentary, “Yo Soy Boricua, Pa’que Tu Lo Sepas! (I’m Boricua, Just So You Know!)“, produced and hosted by Rosie Perez. An enlightening watch.

Being the Lin fan that I am it feels like HBO rewarded me solely for subscribing to HBO Now.

Poor guy, though, seemed on the verge of tears and how could one not be seeing their ancestral homeland treated like that? By their own government? An institution Lin clearly loves from creating Hamilton and being the West Wing fan he is.

You mean attracting corporations and wealthy people to your island on the promises of low taxes doesn’t actually help your financial situation? Oh well, a 50% sales tax should fix it!

As usual, the politicians’ friends will get paid first and everyone else will get fucked.

And with President Clinton, get ready for eight more years of it.

This country is too collectively stupid to deserve better.

Stuff like this is what Oliver is good for, bringing attention to things people don’t know about. Not as much SLAUGHTER-ADMONISH-DYSTROYING Trump.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is basically living the best possible life at this point, isn’t he? He even got to hang with the Canadian PM over the weekend.
