1- While it is true that generally men will only acknowledge sexism and bias if it is corroborated by another man (*not all men, yes, I know)

2- This is blind and deaf in a way that even the Onion would probably peg it ‘too on the nose’ for satire

I think The Onion has trouble with the fact that our world is a satire of its self at this point.

On #1, recently I was telling my male boss about a previous work experience where my old boss was being sued for sexual harassment, among other things. I mentioned off-hand about how he mistreated the female staff and was really condescending and discriminatory to women, but didn’t act the same way towards the men he hired, perfectly respectful, etc. My current boss raised his eyebrow doubtfully and said, “Really, and you think it was because they were male?” He even knew my old boss was under legal investigation for his behavior (he had read articles, etc.) and he still questioned my personal experience of gender discrimination. It just about made my head explode.

I recently heard the CEO of my large company (30k+ employees) speak at a town hall. Someone asked him about women in the company and he said he thinks that the amount of women we have is great, it’s just a matter of retention.

I disagreed with him on this and went to our company directory for HQ. In front-office, client-facing roles, less than 20% of employees are women. Out of all those 550 employees, 60% are senior-level men. Just 7% are senior-level women.

I would send the CEO an email asking him if these numbers are acceptable to him, but I like my job too much.

There was a study that men think 30% of women in a group or if 30% of time used speaking by women means it is gender equal. Anything over that and it is perceived as “female biased”

That is enough women, you knew. They might start cycling together. /s

For a second there, I read it as you disagreed with him publicly. It sucks you can't bring it to his attention.

Somehow, saying the panel is for “male allies” just makes it worse. If the intended audience was “male allies” it would make more sense for the panel to be women to speak about their own experiences.

So - a group of men to talk ABOUT women to other men. I am guessing it is gonna be like Penthouse Forum.

So in the most faint defense of this being an event for “male allies,” there is something to be said for not asking women to do the emotional labor of schooling men about gender equality. In practice, it’s probably pretty optimistic of me to think that it wouldn’t just end up like this: http://www.hulu.com/watch/745176

Women shouldn’t be forced to do the emotional labour of it, but it’s not like no women want to do it. I think the problem is just when women are asked to drop everything and give an hour of their personal time to do that—I don’t see a lot of women getting frustrated with the thought of talking about this stuff if they’re on a panel, being paid and recognized for their work.

What’s so infuriating about this is that Paypal wants to empower male allies without having them actually listen to a woman. Which is a pretty effing important part of being an ally.

I’m sorry but listening to just “male allies” talk uninterrupted for an hour was a large portion of my college experience and I don’t feel the need to subject myself to it again!!!

I’m pretty sure this was everyone’s college experience.
