Better at pop than Michael Jackson.

Better at guitar than Eric Clapton.

How many motherfuckers can say that?

I believe there’s a quote from Clapton out there where someone asks him what it feels like to be the best guitarist in the world, and his response is “Go ask Prince”.

    I teach at a K-12 school.

When I found out that Prince had died, I went for a walk down to the music wing to have a moment with one of my colleagues. As I walked down the senior hallway, I realized that nearly all of the high school students I saw had their phones out.

And then I started to hear snippets of conversation: “Did you hear about Prince...What happened to Prince...Prince was amazing!...This isn’t fair!”

These kids are 16 and 17 and 18 years old, and they got it. One of them stopped me: “Mr. P.,” he said, “did you hear about Prince?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I did. I’m shocked. I don’t know what to say.”

“What’s your favorite Prince song?” he asked.

    “Diamonds and Pearls,” I said.

“I don’t know it. I’ll have to check it out,” he said.

    And on we go.

Your story just brought tears to my eyes. Granted, I’ve been on the verge of tears most of the afternoon, but this just put me over.

I love this story about the origins of “Purple Rain”:

And Prince, what inspired him to write “Purple Rain” was that when they were touring on the 1999 tour, he was following Bob Seger into a lot of arenas, and was really interested in why was Bob Seger such a big star, especially in the Midwest. And Matt Fink, the keyboard player, remembers that he was talking to Prince and said, “Well, it’s these big ballads that Bob Seger writes. It’s these songs like ‘We’ve Got Tonight’ and ‘Turn The Page.’ And that’s what people love.” And Prince went out to try to write that kind of arena-rock power ballad that resulted in “Purple Rain.”

It’s the best thing Bog Seger ever did.

Do any other 80s kids remember this one? There was always a rumor when I was a kid that Prince had challenged Michael Jackson to a dance off. Kids at school would report that it was going to happen on such and such a date. It’d be the kind of thing you’d hear at recess, like, “Did you hear Prince and Michael Jackson are going to battle at the Grammys?!” And then the rest of recess would be an argument about who would win (MJ, obviously).

That was back in the day when Prince was the weird, slightly scary one, while everyone and their mother wanted to be MJ.

And in death he has had his final accomplishment.

Completely stealing all attention on the day that was Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday.

Wish I could see the faces of the Royal Family’s press team who are most likely incredibly pissed off as a result.

This Goddamned year! And it’s only fucking April. I’m an 80's kid, so these losses have been tough to take. Bowie, Rickman, Shandling, Prince - This is my childhood falling away under my feet.

If you’d have told me at the start of the year that we’d lose all of these guys by now, I would have called you a liar and planned your murder.

Fuck this year. Seriously. I want a posse out there; KEEP YOUR EYES ON BON JOVI!!!

So who’s better overall? Give me another performer that can play instruments as well, or writes, produces, arranges and performs all of their HIT albums? And is claimed by so many to be their inspiration to play...

      Honestly, you got nothing.

I’m really not trying to be snarky here, but the greatest of all time? How many people would have said that yesterday?

He was undeniably important to music, and I would never criticize someone for saying he was their favorite artist. I’m just a bit mystified by the hyperbolic nature of a lot of the coverage today.
