    NYE 1999 belonged to him.

    So did every red corvette

    Every heavy rain was purple

    Every beret was raspberry

    And every dove cried.

I insulted him to his face at a concert. Really small venue event for charity. You were never more than three people away from the stage. The show started two hours late and after standing outside in stilettos waiting to get in the venue, I was not in the mood. I was standing dead center in front of the stage, being seriously pissed, when Prince stopped right in front of me and asked “What’s wrong with you?” I replied “I’m not feeling you.” He blinked, kind of taken aback and the moved on. Five minutes later, two moving mountains, posing as his body guards, parted the crowd and made a bee line towards me. I thought, “Oh, I’m about to be thrown out this piece.” They said to me “We hear you’re not feeling the Artist?” I said “Nope.” They asked me to open my hand. They placed four gold engraved guitars picks in my palm. “Feeling better?” Oh, yeah. Five minutes later, I see what can only be the tour manager pointing my direction, standing with a crowd of crew. He walks out, laughing, asking “We hear you’re not feeling the Artist? Here are passes to the afterparty.” We went to the party and stayed till dawn. I didn’t get to talk to him but he did acknowledge me. The rest of the band kept coming up, saying “Did you really say that to him?” all night.

Good night, Sweet Prince. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

I think you’ve told this story here (or at some other media watering hole we have in common) and it remains one of my favorite Prince stories. I’ll bet he was NOT used to hearing that.

I was privileged to have seen him live, at Coachella in 2008. He brought out The Time and Sheila E and I thought I had entered nirvana. Then he launched into Radiohead’s “Creep” and I just stood there, mouth wide open, doing that laugh/cry thing you get to do only a few times in your life. If the world had ended at that moment, I would have been fine with it. Since it didn’t, I had hoped to see him again.

    Sigh.

People hate on music festivals but stuff like this is why I go. I had a similar experience seeing Paul McCartney at Bonnaroo a few years ago. Cry/laughing and laugh/crying were the only things anyone in that crowd of 80 000 people were doing.

That guitar solo above - ending “While my Guitar Gently Weeps” is SO Classic Prince. He could rock a guitar like no other.

I was at the show where he kicked Kim off the stage and it remains one of the top three things I’ve ever seen. (He pulled her up to dance and she WOULDN’T DANCE.)

Also, the entirety of Madison Square Garden was fucking swooning and fanning ourselves for the whole show. It was absolutely amazing and I’m so glad I got to see him once.

I’m super regretting not going to see him in Seattle (last? two?) years ago at the Showbox when I was offered a last minute ticket. I was like, “nah, it’s a weeknight I don’t want to be tired at work tomorrow.” I totally believed I would go see him another time, no chance of not having the opportunity. What the ever loving fuck was I thinking??????

Life, why are you so fleeting???

There’s something brilliantly symbolic about a true artist like Prince kicking the walking embodiment of everything wrong about American celebrity off his stage. I could watch it on a loop, it’s so satisfying.

(Ps. Hi Phyllis! The former Baroness here. Been a while, hope you’re well. xo!)

I was extremely lucky to get tickets to Prince’s show in Baltimore last year, in the aftermath of the Uprising. The officers involved in Freddie Gray’s death had been indicted a few days later and the curfew in the city had recently been lifted, and everyone was ready to party.

I’d always enjoyed his music but didn’t really get what the big deal over him was until I saw him live. Holy shit, you guys. Holy shit.

I’ve never been a big fan of large-venue concerts, but that little man transcended the venue. It was huge and intimate at the same time, and he was incredible. Dancing, singing, playing every instrument out there. I got to hear him sing “Nothing Compares 2 U.” And he ended things with a rendition of “Purple Rain” that probably lasted 20-30 minutes.

But the most amazing moment was after the first time the stage went all dark. The light comes up over the keyboard, and it’s just Prince, all alone on the stage, standing at the keyboard. He says “No curfew,” and immediately launches into “When Doves Cry.”

It gives me goosebumps every time I remember it.

I live in Baltimore and I missed out on tickets. The cheap ones sold too quickly and I was too poor to afford the nicer ones. So sad I didn’t just beg my parents to provide an assist (because they absolutely would have).

That we managed to snag a pair of the cheap tickets is a miracle that I credit to the fact that we were watching Purple Rain on VH1 when tickets went on sale.

Prince appeared on the 90's Muppet Show reboot. It was incredible. 11 year old Fighting Polish had no idea how to process this insanity, but I knew I loved it.

That was my very first exposure to Prince, when I was 7! I still remember watching it in my living room and thinking he was wonderful and wondering if I could have a shape instead of a name too.
