14 years after legalizing everything Portugal has the 2nd lowest overdose death rate in all of Europe. Not only that but drug use has gone down as well. It’s a combination of caring for the addicts and not prosecuting the users that helps break the cycle.

I think they technically decriminalized and put their enforcement funds into treatment, but your overall point still stands.

You can care for the addicts and not prosecute the users without legalization.

We’re not all rational up here HamNo. This guy was my former MP and represented where i used to live in the government. His greatest accomplishment? Calling Nelson Mandela a commie.

They’re criminals and rapists. I mean, a few of them are nice people, but mostly rapists.

Not really. Lucy left the show and that idiot who played Bubbles got arrested on domestic violence issues.

There was already a bit of a pall over the latest season what with it basically coinciding with the Ghomeshi verdict, the domestic violence arrest did not help with that. Got a serious kick out of Tom Arnold and Doug Benson this season though. (Snoop too, but he’s in literally everything, so less exciting).

Speaking at a UN conference on drugs today, Canadian Health Minister Jane Philpot. . .

I’ll admit, that’s impressive. I had to speak in front of my English class once when I was high, and I got really nervous and confused.

There is little doubt that the rational nation—not being prone to American-style fits of periodic extremist insanity, and where medical marijuana is already legal

Wow, that’s deep. Except for the fact that medical marijuana is legal in a majority of states here (and with populations that are an aggregate 5x that of Canada), and it’s already legal in states that have about 2/3 the population of Canada. There are plenty of things to like about Canada, but they’re not exactly way out in front here.

Except that it’s still super-duper illegal federally and the only reason states are getting away with what they are is that the Feds have chosen to selectively enforce the law. Get back to me if the US takes marijuana off Schedule I before Canada legalizes recreational use.

We were supposed to decriminalize in the late ‘90s, but y’all had a fit of southern pique, and the legislation died.

I get the joke, but I’ll be pedantic anyway: they don’t call it “Canadian bacon” in Canada. Only people in the good ol’ U.S. of A do that. There, and everywhere else in the world, it’s called what it actually is: “back bacon.” Canada refers to belly bacon in the same way we do: by just calling it “bacon.”
