We’ve reached out to Snapchat for comment and will update if they get back to us.

They won’t, it’s already been ten seconds.

This is a bit of an aside, but could the Bob Marley brand possibly become any more adulterated? They hawk everything from headphones to coffee. I’m not a huge Marley fan by any means but the extent to which the name has been exploited is absurd.

Wouldn’t this be more akin to wearing a Bob Marley mask than putting on blackface? Does a white person wearing a mask of an actual non-white person count as black/yellow/brownface?

That’s a valid question. But why can’t they just put the dreads and the hat and call it a day? I’ve seen plenty of super white people (like my father, for example, who is WHITE, but loves all things coastal, including Bob Marley, so he dressed like him for Halloween a few years ago - no mask or Jesus, black face, required. It just wasn’t ever considered) Why is it here?

The mask is a good question, though.

It’s more than just putting Bob Marley’s brown face on yours. It’s that Bob Marley has been fucking reduced to a weed meme, and people feel the need to invoke him and Rastafarianism on a day about weed. It's not funny.

That isn’t Snapchat’s fault. This isnt white people’s fault. This is probably Bob Marley’s families fault.

Go direct your anger at the right person, for once.

If it makes you feel any better, from just the eyes on up you kinda look like Danny Trejo rocking a sombrero.

I just learned that his father was a white British army officer, which really makes his stances on colonialism and racism more poignant. Still not a big fan of his music though.

Most people don’t know this, which is sad. The impact of having a white (and absent) father played into his understanding of the world and politics on a deeper level. He really was revolutionary, and I think much of it would’ve been lost if he hadn’t been born with that duality.

UPDATE (10:40 a.m.) A spokesperson for Snapchat says:

The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.

Bob Marley’s estate is behind the filter so I don’t really care one way or the other. I’m sure some still continue to not approve and that’s their choice.

Yes, because of all the things Bob Marley was known for, being black was first and foremost.

      “You ever hear Bob Marley?”

      “Who?”

      “The famous reggae singer?”

      “The what?”

      “Black guy?
      “OOOHHHH!! Him...”

        This is not “blackface”

Calling this racism actually hurts the cause, it obfuscates the **real** issues we need to discuss in favor of bullshit nonsense.

This is not racism, saying it is hurts the cause.

One should have to go full Ted Danson before it’s called blackface.
