Do young men his age typically need mommy to solve all of their problems? Because I don't think they are men yet if that is the case.

I’m not sure she understands the word “typical” at all, to begin with.

The kid is just stupid, and that’s his only problem.

Even if he wasn’t interested in the subject, if he was smart he’d have learned how to “jump through the hoops” by now. Hasn’t he ever taken a boring course? I had to pretend I enjoyed The Sun Also Rises. I passed.

My heart goes out to whoever tries to educate this kid. It’s going to be a Sisyphean ordeal.

I don't think stupid is his only problem. I would add lazy and spoiled to the list.

Oh God. Come on, LA-based Jezzies. You MUST respond to this. I am so sad that neither I nor my extensive network of academically-inclined feminists live in the area and can lunch in Bel Air on this lady’s dime while verbally lashing helping her son.

I’d like to help, but I dropped out of my only Women’s Studies class at UCLA after 2 weeks. Besides, that was over 2 decades ago and I’m sure the field has seen a lot of scholarly development since that time.

In my imagined best case scenario 5 Jezzies show up to take turns schooling this guy in every sense of the word.

Someone who replied to the ad sent us her correspondence with the mom in question; I’ve redacted everyone’s name.

The fact that his mommy is taking out the ad to help him is very telling. He'll fail, but he lives in Bel-Air, so I am sure mommy and daddy can help him land on his feet. And now I'm depressed.

He has a big paper due in a few weeks and he hasn’t even started.

Do people start undergrad papers weeks in advance? Even big ones? Because the biggest one I’ve written (not counting papers written over the course of a whole semester, or papers written in groups) was a couple that about 13-14 pages each, and between research and writing, they only took like, 3 days. These were days I where I spent the bulk of the day working, but still.

More importantly, how does this guy, who can’t pass a course because he finds it boring, graduating university? I think that’s just the excuse he gave mom, when there’s really something else going on here...

I suspect that the hasn't completed an assignment in that class all semester (or quarter?) and this is one of those do-or-die assignments. He probably has to get a 95%+ just to pass the class.

I’ve had classes with one paper written over the course of the whole semester, but somehow I suspect what must be an intro level course isn’t assigning anything like that. I’d place my money on no work having been done all semester, and possibly not many classes attended either, and that the job is basically to teach this person enough of the subject to pass from scratch.

Um, Mom? As the wife of a university professor, I can tell you that that is what the instructor’s office hours are for, as well as the writing lab. He could get all the assistance he needs, if he just pulled his head out of his ass, and did some work. Sorry, not sorry, he’s going to fail, and he deserves to with an attitude like that. Actively resisting education, and choosing not to learn anything about the class topic means he FAILS.

As a former university professor, I totally agree. Plus there's probably a way for him to get a tutor through the school, although at this point it might be too late.

Also, colleges offer FREE tutoring, which I’m assuming is advertised on at least one bulletin board in each building, if not all of them (especially now that the end of the semester is near). Putting up a Craigslist ad for “help” with a paper tells me that this mother is looking for someone to basically write the paper for him, which is something university tutors will definitely not do.
