I was a DG at Columbia and this is bullshit. We had booze at the house all the time — you just keep it discreet because yes, there are idiotic double standards in place.

Shame on whoever posted the picture. I guess the tipster will be taking pics of people having beer in Carman* next. *massive eye roll*

    *freshman dorm; no alcohol allowed

Next someone will report that people sneak booze into the Barnard quad. Scandal.

Signed, someone who most definitely never had booze in the Barnard quad.

So I don’t get the message here. Is the issue that he posted a pic of a student without her consent? Or is the issue that he posted a pic showing they were breaking the rules by having vodka? Neither makes sense, given that she is not identifiable, if this is the pic in question:

It’s that the picture depicted someone breaking the rules because there was vodka in the house.

Buuuuut.... the room isn’t actually identifiable as being in the Theta brownstone, just that the individual is in a Theta’s room, so...

Maybe, if you know that your sorority will be punished if you consume alcohol in your house, you should avoid taking pictures with it in the background. Maybe this means you keep your booze in the closet or in a cupboard, you take it out to mix a drink and then put it back even though that’s obviously onerous and sad.

Maybe kids today need more Lindsay Lohan; she was a good example of the always check what’s in the background before you share the pic principle.

They should take every pic with exposed alcohol just to protest that bullshit rule.

Unless frats can not have alcohol as well.

It’s an insurance thing. Insurance prices for Greek houses skyrocket when you allow students to drink in the house. Sororities have, on the national level, decided it’s not worth it financially to allow drinking in their houses. Historically fraternities allowed it, but as insurance prices have gone up, a number of them have either been forced to go dry because they can’t afford the insurance otherwise, or have chosen to do so on their own to lower costs. (Fraternities who do allow drinking pay an average of an extra $200 in insurance per member every year to make it happen, to say nothing of the increased costs in house upkeep.)

At the current rate of insurance increases (and lawsuit threats), in twenty years almost all of the fraternities will be dry, too.

Apropos of nothing, the original article was titled “Tequila Sunsets Over Theta Brownstone” which I find to be hilariously overwrought.

Good gravy! That sounds like an 80s After School Special or a cautionary YA novel. Hilarious! The editor should resign for allowing that title.

College, even a big time school like Columbia, just seems so small from this side of it. Tiny tempests in toy teapots.
