For people not from PA: this has been a hilariously longtime coming, with one politician holding it up for forever. He’s cried in public about just how awful weed is.

Yep, there was an NPR article last month that covered the rampant use of heroine in Kutztown, PA (although it’s more widespread than that, of course, but they just focused on this town). The thing that really depressed me was that nurses of the middle and high schools now stock naloxone in case of an overdose. Just so sad :(

Honestly, I doubt it will be long until recreational is legalized here in PA. It will generate so many tax dollars that the shitty legislature can skim that there’s no way they’ll want to miss out.

Yeah, but that will cut into the judiciary skimming from for profit jails. Checks and balances!

The thing that’s missing from much of the narrative of marijuana legalization is that medicinal marijuana is actually quite specialized into strains that effect certain results. It’s not the anonymous bag of ditchweed that comes to mind when so many people think of “legal marijuana”. The science behind it is fascinating, and, because of its prohibition, researchers have only been able to scratch the surface. Having tried some varietals for my anxiety and depression in a "legal" state, I was impressed by the effects; I didn't feel overly buzzed or paranoid. I just felt ... better. There's so much promise there

True say. The medical treatments don’t involve much of a “high” if at all, but their therapeutic effects certainly are better than other, say opiate, treatments.

SO MUCH THIS. I mentioned to Mike Pipper above that, like his dear friend, I’ve got endometriosis, and our options for relief are frustratingly limited. For pain relief, it’s basically opiates on the one end and fucking tylenol on the other. Weed is an ideal solution, but criminalization is a major problem. Different strains produce wildly different results; some might take your pain away and leave your cognition and emotions relatively untouched, some do the exact opposite. Under prohibition, you really don’t know what you’re getting (unless you’re really close to the grow operation itself, which is unlikely), so it’s a total crapshoot. I’ve gotten weed that’s relieved my cramps like a champ, and then I’ve gotten stuff that’s made them worse. From the same dealer. I just want to be able to walk in a goddamn store, read a label, and get what I need. The fact that we can do that (essentially) with narcotics but not with marijuana is the most assfuckingbackwards thing I can think of.

      *end rant.*

Missouri needs to hurry up and join the party, sleep problems and bitchin cramps are fucking my shit up, as I get older it doesn’t get any easier. I never thought sleep was a problem as a teen but as I get into my mid-twenties i’d give an arm and leg for a good night’s sleep.

it’s still only legal now for very specific medical diagnoses in PA, not insomnia/anxiety/cramps/IBS/a whole fucking list of other conditions that it would treat effectively. lawmakers are dumb and shitty. PA needs to join the bigger, better party

Ah. Thank you for pointing that out.

I had no clue it could help with IBS, which i’ve been living with for over a year now.

I love this news. It means my Sister-From-Another-Mister can get treatment that ACTUALLY helps her Endo.

    Here’s hoping she qualifies.

I live in one of the remaining 26 states and have exhausted all treatments for anxiety.

Make a list of places I need to move to, people. This life-as-is-shit ain’t cutting it.

From the state that still charges the 18% Johnstown flood tax for alcohol. We’re still being fleeced for it even though the flood damage was paid for by 1942. I live 15 min from Delaware and happily bootleg my alcohol to deny PA its “due”.

The problem is, if they repeal the tax, they have to get the money for the general fund from somewhere else (obviously we have some pretty serious budget problems thanks to our terrible state legislature/Corbett’s legacy of shittiness). A sin tax isn’t necessarily a bad thing (although obviously it’s going to be largely regressive, so that largely sucks.) All that being said, if I lived 15 minutes from DE, I would definitely be bootlegging.
