On the one hand, it turns out this was a lame setup that helps the “politicians are fake” argument.

On the other hand - still okay with me that he took the time to explain something scientific, as opposed to the polar opposite of actively denying science.

He exhibited a level of knowledge on the subject that nearly literally anyone could grasp within a few moments. This is not a high bar being set.

His predecessor was a climate change denier, so I mean it’s not like the bar was all that high to start with.

So it was a setup. So what? Let’s stick to what’s important here...

This is the lamest “setup” I’ve ever heard of. I came in, based on the headline, thinking it was going to be a planted question, but it was just a politician maneuvering... like politicians do.

Apparently you didn’t read past the headline. It was a planted question, just planted in way that doesn’t involve a corrupted press.

How the question was delivered is not the problem. The way it was reported was the problem.

Ha. North Koreanification. Did you happen to notice that the Canadian Press has always sucked?

ETA: this seems like a very strange issue on which to criticize him for manipulating the press or them for going along; he’s promoting the science and the institution because the government just made a large investment in them.

The Canadian media has a severe love-in going for Trudeau, not least of which because he’s a polar opposite of Harper in terms of, well, everything really - age, message, access, interests, charisma, etc.

I’m all for more open communication between government and media but the pendulum seems to have swung a bit far the other way. No doubt in time things will even out but for now it’s a bit embarrassing to see some media types falling all over themselves when it comes to Justin Trudeau.

to adopt that look consciously (the mustache) to me is very odd. why would one choose to look like the cliche/meme about creepy men? (with the hair it’s like a nightmare phil spector / terry richardson mashup)

Yo JK... thanks for the love (any publicity is good publicity - DJ Trump), but the real scandal is that he has not moved on legalization. So what this means is that the RCMP is busting LEGAL dispensaries in Vancouver and random local police forces are doing arbitrary enforcement as well. While the Trudeau government was elected in part on the promise to legalize (ok and to blow out that bible salesmen Harper) it is in effect running under the same repressive rules. That just blows so bad... for those of us who read about Colorado and are green with envy it is like having a Ted Cruz autographed dildo shoved up our collective asses.

Even if it was staged, it at least demonstrated enough intellectual curiosity to have a cursory understanding of an advanced technology still in development.

Any world leader should be able to offer that explanation of what quantum computing is. They should be able to briefly explain nuclear fission and superconductors and how the internet works, too.

The bar is extraordinarily low. I doubt Donald Trump could explain any scientific concept.

No, that’s really not necessary. Knowledge of nuclear fission doesn’t make you any better at championing the disposal of nuclear weapons. Nor do I want somebody micromanaging disbursements for research based on a “bill nye the science guy” episode understanding of the field.

It would be nice, though, if they weren’t there because their dad was prime minister. Maybe they would have some actual qualifications for their job. This guy is a vapid bimbo on the order of Sarah Palin (although Sarah Palin didn’t get her job from nepotism). But everyone loves him here because he’s a liberal.

Signed, someone with an actual engineering degree, who understands and apprrciates these things more than Trudeau does, probably.

Thanks for your insight. I’m an engineer too, and I don’t mind having political leaders who champion science and seek to know something about it.

Any adult who can’t explain nuclear fission in a sentence or two absolutely shouldn’t be anywhere near a seat of power.

Justin Trudeau’s Quantum Computing Explanation Was Likely Staged for Publicity because politicians gonna politic.

But he also answered the reporter’s original qustion about Daesh, so there’s nothing scandalous or interesting going on here other than the fact that no one appears to give a fuck about his answer to that question.

Because if you pay attention to this shit at all he has answered that question 756 times before. The quantum answer is a first, hence it gets reported.
