This is some bullshit here. You even declare it’s the equivalent of turnstile jumping. People should pay the damn fare. The system is broke enough.

Tell that to my clients who can’t afford $5.50 for a round trip because they earn under $1200 a month, and after taxes and rent, $5.50 is 2% or more of their entire monthly disposable income.

As much as it may shock you, a lot of people in New York are really fucking poor and $5.50 is a lot of money for a round trip.

Ugg! I don’t know who I can’t stand more, the NYPD or the guys begging for a swipe at the subway.

I mean, I am compassionate guy and all that. But seriously, you are an adult. Before you leave the house, the first thing you should be doing is making sure you have money for subway. If you can’t afford it, just stay home and make a sandwich.

Seriously, it is just 5 dollars for a foot long. Pay up, cheapskate!

Some communities in New York have over 30% of residents under the poverty line. For those people, $5 is quite a lot of money. That can be food for several nights.

People go hungry in New York because they can’t buy food and you’re going to judge them for asking someone to spare literally zero dollars by swiping them in with an unlimited Metro Card?

Go think about what you’ve said.

NY sounds like it would be better off without the NYPD.

It used to be their job was always after-the-fact responses to stuff that’s already committed. Now they’re just looking for any reason to fuck with the public. Which is why I would never call the NYPD for anything. Don’t matter to me anyway, I’m already dead. Everything now is gravy.

I mean, this is better than arresting people and sending them to jail, but I don’t think we should be ticketing people for this either. I’ve never seen anyone asking for a swipe that gave off the “I can totally afford this, I just don’t feel like paying for it, suckers!” vibe, so it kinda seems like they’re just trying to make being poor a crime or something...

I guess I can always just allow them to walk through the emergency exit when I leave because I am too lazy to wait my turn at the turnstile.

I may be wrong, but I think the ticket/arresting is/was more about the pan handeling and impeding traffic. but I don’t know. I don’t live there or in an area similar.

While the NYPD is arresting the guy politely asking for a swipe, the guy shitting on the platform is pulling up his pants and getting on the train. Without so much as using hand sanitizer.

I once saw some white dude in a suit berating a young hispanic woman who was carrying groceries and a baby for asking (politely) for a swipe through. It was raining, 8pm, she was just about in tears. I didn’t even interrupt him in his rant - just swiped her in and helped her carry her bags down the stairs because who the fuck wouldn’t?? All the while, that dickbag kept screaming about how ‘if you can’t afford the fare you shouldn’t be allowed to ride the train!’. Ugh, some people are just fucking evil.

On that note, I wish there was a law that required helping old people and people with kids carry their grocery bags up and down the stairs.

I agree with the premise of being better people and that some people are evil, but I dunno man.... I saw that season finale of Seinfeld, and don’t want the entire population of NY imprisoned because we didn’t hold the door.

Can we arrest people who stand chatting in the turnstiles or sit in the middle of staircases instead?

I actually didn’t know that the NYPD arrested people for this—I’ve never seen it. But fuck that. If you’re a New Yorker, and you have an unlimited card, it is absolutely your duty to swipe without hesitation upon request, unless you actually need that transfer in less than 18 minutes.

Public defender here - last week, I worked arraignments in Brooklyn and represented a 17 year old boy who was put thru the system (i.e. He was in jail.) - the only charge - begging. Begging for what you ask? For someone to swipe him onto the train. Fuck the nypd.
