“’Age doesn’t mean inability, it can mean wisdom,’ she said.”

I applaud the sentiment, but setting off into the desert with insufficient fuel doesn’t strike me as especially wise.

I think she only had the dog with her. At least, that’s all I’m seeing in the ABC story (and other sources) and it seems like the dog is fine.

If she left the cat in the car in a desert for days on end, I’d doubt the kitty would make it. =\

ETA: Nevermind. In the video she says she had Nikki, her cat, with her and she was found with the car.

I read a couple other articles on this and the one thing none of them explain is why/how she ended up where she was. She was supposedly driving from Tuscon to Phoenix, yet ended up 100s of miles away in a different direction. As they don’t say she was going somewhere else first, I’m wondering if she took the wrong highway for 150 miles without realizing it and that’s why she ran out of gas- she’d thought she’d have plenty to get to Phoenix and still wasn’t clued in that she’d gone in the wrong direction.

      Yeah...

Having made that drive lots, and having even had car trouble on that road (blown out tire bleehhhh. People were nice though and AAA were rockin’), I’m trying to figure out what happened.

It’s totally possible that her plan was to go up there and hike or something for a couple of days and then go to Phoenix, it’s just weird that every article says she was driving from Tuscon to Phoenix. If she was on the wrong road virtually the entire trip, I’m a bit concerned about her general mental state. :(

If you’re looking for tales of survival, I’ll have you know that I did not have any coffee today. That’s right: I am completely caffeine-free and still conscious.

Never leave the car. . . .ever. . . never ever ever. OK maybe if it’s on fire, but even then you should stay near the damn wreckage.

if she was so freaking wise, how is it that she did not have a full tank of gas when she headed into the remote area, alone, with her pets? I mean, I am glad the story ended ok - but how does it end with her touting her wisdom?

Yeah, glad she’s okay, but rule #1 when your car breaks down or whatever in the desert is DON’T LEAVE THE CAR.

Also, she didn't pack food and lots and lots of water for herself and the pets just in case? The desert is no joke.

      Yep!

On April 9, an officer found her dog walking out of the Canyon Creek area, and then in an aerial search, a crew saw Rodger’s “help” sign made out of sticks and rocks.

When I was a kid in AZ my school did trainings on how to survive in the desert if you got lost there. Maybe she remembered how to choose prickly pears and look for water in the bases of plant leaves? She’s a damn hero.

The dust storm preparation PSAs were pretty Arizona too. Still can’t remember if you’re supposed to turn your lights off or leave them on when you pull over on the highway...thankfully, there are no dust storms where I live now.
