It seems like nobody’s really feeling the Olympics this year. Let’s just do something else instead. Like instead of the Summer Olympics we can bring back MTV Beach House featuring amazing athletes instead of Carson Daly and Carmen Electra and everybody will get a gold medal just for being there and having a good attitude.

I worry about all of the athletes competing - in actual raw sewage - during a serious viral outbreak. We shouldn’t be sending anyone. I second MTV Beach House, with Olympic-themed events.

You don’t understand why the athletes are competing? They have trained for YEARS for this one event that only happens every 4 years. In many sports (gymnastics is the best example), the 2016 games are their only chance to compete and fulfill for what most athletes is a lifelong dream. Most athletes would risk a lot more than viral infection to be in Rio.

Does men’s soccer generate more revenue?

According to a segment on Jon Oliver’s show (I think) the women’s team brought in way more revenue last year, but in the past the men’s team brought in more.

IIRC, the women’s team earned 16mil in revenue last year and the men’s team lost 2mil. So no, not by a long shot.

I feel bad for anyone on the team who isn’t in support of the boycott. Like, sorry no Olympics for you.

I'd love to see the Men's National Team step up in support. The Federation would really listen, then. They've been awfully quiet though, which pisses me off. Loud about a retired players DUI, quiet about their teammates being treated fairly. I'm sure they're salty because they suck, but come on, boys. It only benefits you to support the Women's team in this lawsuit.

Landon Donovan already said they shouldn’t be paid equally, even though he deleted most of those tweets later. Tim Howard kind of supported them, when asked directly, but the way he said it sounded like he pretty much thought it was their problem, not his.

I’d love to see the women get paid more than the men (because more wins) and then see whether the men think that’s fair or not.

Eh, by August there will probably be as much Zika in the U.S. as there is in Brazil.

As a Canadian I am still piiissssssed about the Canada v. U.S.A. women’s semi-final in 2012. But I 100% support the U.S.A. women’s soccer team on this - good luck to them.

That was legitimately the most stressful soccer game (as a US fan) I have ever watched in my life. And I’m the kind of fan who has to pace nervously while watching the last 10 minutes of even non-essential matches.

That game was crazy! I “worked from home” that day so I could watch the game. No regrets.

The Australian women’s soccer team had to strike recently - to get their pay raised to minimum wage. Like the US team, they were having greater success than the men’s team, and training as hard. But while the men were earning enough to play as a full-time job, the women were not. They had to work to support themselves while playing and even meet many of their own expenses. There’s not even the argument used against women’s tennis, that the matches are shorter than the men’s. Fucking disgraceful.

This doesn´t make sense. Soccer players don´t make their money off their national teams but of their clubs. They get bonuses to play but they make their living of their club wages. You are almost arguing about why do the US rugby team players have to work other jobs and not make a living off rugby. Australian players are proffesional players in Europe and the A league and I don´t think most women are proffesional in Australia. Men soccer is just bigger and gives them more opportunity which also means that´s why it´s more competitive and why a country like Australia can dominate in the women´s game easier than in the men´s.

No, this was explicitly about how much each team got paid to play for Australia. I don’t remember the details but I think the men were effectively being paid a retainer to enable them to train full time, and the women weren’t.

I gotta admit, between the toxic water, the anti-IOC protests, and now the massive popular uprising against the government after the Panama Papers, I am not convinced we’re going to have an Olympics this year.
