She really thinks that she’s just trying to help :( :(

She probably considers herself a realist. With a shrug.

The real problem is that we allow girls to go to school at all! With their boobs and legs and various holes that could be penetrated....it’s a recipe for disaster.

Also, once women are of child bearing age it’s CONFUSING to men. They think, “It can bear children but is owned by no one? What’s it having sex with then? Should it be me? I can’t let it run around all willy nilly!” And that’s when rape happens. But if we marry girls off to the highest bidder at 12-well then. Problem solved! No teacher would dare sniff around a child owned by another male.

So really I guess there are two reasonable solutions! I feel better.

I’m pretty sure dudes are gonna get ideas no matter how long/short girls skirts are. I refuse to be held responsible for other people’s thoughts, I don’t always like being responsible for my own. I most definitely will not accept responsibility for anyone else’s actions .

Oh my God this. History tells us that we can wear the most modest pilgrim outfit ever, and we’re still going to scandalize someone with a flash of sexy, sexy ankle.

This article feels obtuse. I believe she is saying there is a difference between understandable and acceptable. Grown men started propositioning me when I was 12, because I looked like a grown woman at that age. This was both understandable and unacceptable. Can't we hold both ideas at once?

Presumably those men didn’t know you were 12, they just pegged your age wrong. Badu is talking about male adults working in a school setting knowing that these are children — and their charges.

Also, she generalized. Not al 12 year olds look like a grown woman.

Ugh. There is so much that is wrong in her tweets. She is suggesting that predatory teachers only go after teens or preteens in short skirts or tight tops, etc. But that is false. Many predators choose their intended victims based on them being viewed as less conventionally attractive and thus less credible if they choose report their abuser.

Also the school is apparently hiring a lot of predators. So much so that they know it and would rather police the girl’s uniform than...you know...hiring non-pedophiles.

In the words of Tina Fey (who sometimes gets it right) in her Prayer of a Mother For Its Daughter: “Let her be beautiful, but not damaged - for it is the damage that attracts the creepy softball coach, not the beauty.”

In my high school something happened between a teacher and a student. The student was not conventionally ugly but she wasn’t one of the class hotties, and was quiet, odd and lonely, shunned by the popular kids and didn't have much social currency. At the time I was just confused by it all (including by the fact this teacher was not himself a prize in the looks department so teenage me was puzzled by the attraction on her side) but as an adult I can absolutely look back and say he probably groomed her with attention and validation that she wasn't getting elsewhere. :/

As a dad, I’m torn about this. I want my daughters to understand that they “are not” responsible for the actions of others. I also want them to understand that they “are” responsible for their own safety and that some men (and women) are not good people. At the end of the day I am far less interested in the feminist politics of it then I am their actual well being. I realize that is probably an awkward thing to say on Jezzie, but I don’t like it when we swing so far in the other direction of no victim blaming that we don’t spend anytime discussing how girls need to learn the tools necessary to help create safe places in their lives. I want them to be armed mentally, emotionally and physically to the best of their abilities. Both my girls take (and love) martial arts, soccer, archery and gymnastics/dance. We also talk about the usual stranger danger stuff, and now with my older daughter we talk about what to do when boys or men (or women) do or say things that make her uncomfortable. Soon it will be about the pressure/control that boys her age will try and place on her. We don’t police how she dresses, but we do insist she wear clothes that at least cover up her underwear and training bra. I want her to freely express herself, but I also don’t want to make her a target for creepy weirdos. I want to see an article on Jezzie that discuss ways that modern parents can help empower our young girls to be safe in feminist friendly ways. I think we need that more than click-baity articles about dumb people saying dumb things.

See, this is the issue. Your daughters are already targets for creepy weirdos. Creepy weirdos are going to see your daughters as sexual objects and pieces of meat whether they are wearing bathing suits, shorts and tank tops, or long-sleeved, loose-fitting maxi dresses. This isn’t because of anything your daughters do or don’t do — it’s because they are creepy weirdos. Just like telling women they can keep themselves from being raped by not wearing short skirts has had absolutely zero effect on rape, telling them that dressing modestly enough will keep creepy weirdos from zeroing in on them doesn’t make them any safer. It just shifts the blame to them if and when they do become the victim of a creepy weirdo.

Women are catcalled, harassed, sexually abused and raped wearing sweatpants and oversized t-shirts. Housecoats. Burkas. The common denominator is the creepy weirdo, not what the woman is wearing (or doing).

I’m all for “empowering young girls to be safe in a feminist-friendly ways,” but suggesting that girls can avoid being targeted by creepy weirdos if they only dress in the appropriate way isn’t empowering, it doesn’t keep them safe, and it certainly isn’t feminist.

Well, personally, I know that when I see a child with a cookie, I’m unable to control myself because hunger is a natural human urge and cookies are delicious.

I mean, can you blame me for knocking the cookie out of their little hands and running off with it?
