Yes, that’s certainly what I look like when I take to my bed. Especially all the flora.

I always look like someone who ate toast in bed and just brushed out the crumbs before her boyfriend came back.

The rest cure was actually pretty horrifying. Weeks-to-months in bed with NOTHING to do. No reading material, no visitors, nothing “stimulating,” no getting up to use the commode or bathe. NOTHING. Just the bed (usually in a hospital, so the room was sterile, too) and bland soups delivered by a nurse. Women who were previously “anxious” or “nervous” or whatever bullshit got them prescribed the rest cure were physically weakened from prolonged inactivity, depressed, and emotionally broken. It was pretty much solitary confinement.

So... Sure. Hysteria was bullshit. But is it wrong I’m amused that the treatment was getting women to orgasm?

What's the 19th Century term for the frustration of being unable to correct a dumb typo after and unreasonably small window on Kinja?

I love these little historical tidbits from a long time ago. They remind me that we are not the first generation to deal with all the bullshit of life and other generations came and went with their own remedies for existential angst.

They are also a good reminder for when people lament how soft and weak people are these days. Some people try to make you feel bad for taking a long weekend to decompress, but our great-grandparents were taking 2 months.

Some people are dicks. I have to remind myself of this all the time. I need... NEED... my two days of weekend to decompress and recharge every week. I work with many driven type A personalities who love to work on the weekends. If I am not careful, they slowly suck me into their mindset that giving my precious free time up to replace with work is the right thing to do. I have to be ever vigilant and you do too.

We live in Bizarro world. Workaholics who are no heroes. They are filling the emptiness of their lives with work and it is culturally rewarded unlike some other vices such as hard liquor and gambling. I am sure that in Victorian times, some who took longer times off were still made to feel morally weak by those who took less time off. Some humans are just dicks!

I would take 6 weeks at a hot spring. Please. It might rid me of my cold while at it.

You and me both. I would like to take several weeks to not think about moving, or student loans, or the fact that my state has suddenly decided that my 2014 tax return was wrong. Nope. None of it.

Idk about you, but I would take 6 weeks in a fluffy bed (no thanks on the bed pan) over the drudgery of my day job in a hot second. A HOT SECOND.

Right on. I’ve been burned out as F at my job for at least two years. My productivity has gone to shit. However I am also currently the breadwinner, so jumping ship would be idiotic until my spouse can finally find a job. Sometimes I take a Monday off to burn off some of my mountain of PTO, but I spend the day anxious because I'm off my routine and worry my boss will get annoyed.
