    Good.

Is it common practice for school districts to have their own police force? I have no experience with this having grown up in a teeny place that didn't even have its own force for the village.

In san antonio at least. Both my middle school and high school had at least a hand full of campus cops.

The town of 50,000 that I live in has School Resource Officers that are employed by the PD but work in the schools.

She said in the local news that she doesn’t remember the body slam itself, which is probably for the best.

Whatever you do, do not read the comments in the article. If the measure of any society is how it treats the least among them, then we are truly headed to hell in a hand-basket. When we justify Police officers beating on children and call the children animals (or worse) we have a HUGE problem.

The fact that some people react that way to a brutal physical assault on a child (who hadn’t even committed a crime) is nauseating. Either some people have disturbingly selective empathy, or they’re so committed to this “Cops always good” narrative that they can’t even budge from it no matter how egregious the incident.

I mean, my mom is definitely pro-police, but even she acknowledged that this and the Eric Garner thing were bullshit.

    Fired is good.

Arrested for assault of a minor would be better.

All in good time. You want investigations like this airtight; you want to make sure your “i”s are dotted and your “t”s are crossed. You don’t want weasel like this wriggling his way out of the punishment he so richly deserves.

Felony assault on a child. Send him to prison and let word get out he’s a child beater...see how long he lasts with the big boys!!!

Make falsifying a report a felony. Flat out, non negotiable jail time for cops caught lying about incidents. It’s absolutely absurd that they know they can make shit up and just hope tapes don’t show up.

(ETA: I hope she sues the cop and police force into oblivion. A fucking brick floor my god)

I actually agree - make it have the same penalty and evidentiary burden as knowingly lying under oath or giving a knowingly false statement to police. These arseholes are in such positions of power and it’s about time they got fucking accountable.

I’ve never seen an instance where having a cop arrest a kid in school turned out well. Those cops are always on a power trip. What happened to breaking up a fight and sending them to detention? Jail isn’t needed. Counseling probably is.

But we live in America so that’s never going to happen.

While I agree on your main point, there are students that are bringing weapons to schools with an intent to use them on other students/faculty. They probably need more than a timeout.

My middle and high schools had a school cop on hand, but most of the day to day crowd control was handled by large gym teachers who could pluck fighting kids by the backs of their necks like misbehaving kittens, while another yelled in their faces. The resulting humiliation and fear was usually enough to calm them as they were escorted to the principal's office and - worst of all - parents were called. Doesn't matter whether the cops call parents or the principal calls parents - you're still in deep shit when that happens. (Special bonus: while waiting outside the principals office, the kids had to sit in chairs that played twinkly nursery songs.)

If an administration investigation is ongoing, hopefully that will lead to charges against this guy for assault. Like, unless a student is brandishing a weapon or is physically assaulting someone themselves, I do not understand why a school police officer or security guard should even be laying a hand on a kid, and even then it should be to disarm someone or pull fighting kids apart, not hit or push or SLAM them themselves! Also, this whole “school police officer” trend seems to be complete shit. I’d love to see studies on how effective they are at actually preventing violence vs. escalating situations (I’m assuming their intent is to prevent violence or school shootings or something, but who knows) to see what’s actually going on.

I was in high school in the 90s and they had them in my school. They were almost all women though. I went to school across from a notorious housing project and the school had serious violence problems before.

So two girls were fighting verbally. The police gets called and they find that the best way of deescalating the situation is throwing a girl on the floor face first? How does that make sense?

It doesn’t, which is why the guy lost his job and hopefully will face criminal and civil charges as well.
