    Beauty Thread!

Nothing new to report, but I’d certainly like to hear about your wins and losses this week. Maybe some extra posts about people who won the eyelining game.

Personally, I’m old, so I stick to a soft pencil liner and don’t circle my eyes.

I’ve been doing winger eyeliner for almost 20 years now! People always ask me how I do it, and I say “Don’t go for perfect”. My eyeliner isn’t always completely even, but it’s not noticeable.

Yay beauty thread! :D I tried a cut crease for the first time ever last weekend. For some reason it’s never dawned on me to try it before, but I’m obsessed with late ‘60s-style makeup (nude lips + heavy eye makeup and falsies) and wanted it to look authentic. It was harder than I thought it would be but I was really happy with the results since I accidentally made myself look kinda like Lana del Rey (not that I actually look like her, but I think my makeup was pretty on point). So, I guess I sort of won the eyeliner game! I’m not nearly as on point as Adele and her MUA though, obviously! I don’t really like sharing pictures of myself here but since I can’t take a picture of *just* my makeup, here are the results of my hard work on my face:

I used a wet flat, thin eyeshadow brush for the cut crease (the one that comes with the Naked 1 palette) and basically just drew the line above my socket with black shadow really carefully. Oh and then blended the hell out of it upwards. Any cut crease pros here who have tips to make it easier in the future? Other tools I should be using? Or is it just that I need to practice more? Thank you, fellow beauty nerds!

ETA: Dammit Kinja, why are my pictures sideways?!

Emily is super confused by playing youtube videos of kittens. She wants them.

It is my birthday weekend and I traveled to see my bestie in the bay. We were going to visit Ikea and have In-N-Out and generally were living life and then we spun out on the freeway and almost died and it was so fucking scary and also really showed how different we are as human beings.

My best friend is a very calm person who only breaks down after the shit goes down and she was driving so she was able to get it together and get us safely off the road.

I was screaming my head off and I was a fucking mess. Especially since, as the passenger, there was absolutely nothing I could do, but screaming was doing something.

We ended up stuck across both lanes on the highway and I kept saying “we have to get out of the road, we have to get off the road omg we’re gonna die. Dude, we are still on the middle of the road.”

She was like,”I know, but it is ok, no one is hurt and the car wasn’t hit, cool it, you are fine” then she got us out of the road and safely home.

When we got home, she started crying and we had a pot of tea to fortify ourselves.

We abandoned our plans and got sushi that was walking distance to her house.

I am going to get so wasted tonight to celebrate making it to 26.

    Hey Jezzies,

How many people wish they were in a locale with weirder more progressive people? (or are those just going extinct in this country) Maybe it’s just a mood, yet the latest regressive wave in the usa can be a little :(.

Then again, there us always ice cream & puppies. :)

I’m in Portland, OR and was taking it for granted for a while. I’d kind of like to be in a place with a better job market, less expensive, maybe better weather. I recently traveled to a rural-ish area for a job interview that was terribly sexist and came back with a new appreciation for this place.

I felt like that before I started grad school, because I was living in my rural, conservative New Jersey hometown that made the place I lived in Texas during undergrad seem super liberal (it was Houston, so not that surprising, but still, I didn’t think I’d have to go to Texas to find liberals). Now I’m in New York City, and at a school of public health, so while as a whole, the US could stand to be much more progressive, I am super happy to be in one of the country’s more progressive cities, in a program full of people who are super into social justice and universal healthcare and stuff. I do worry about how much of a bubble I live in though.

Girl parent Jezzies- at what age did your child start becoming concerned with their appearance?

My daughter is 4- almost 5- and she is SO concerned with how she looks. Every day she has to wear a formal “pretty” dress, and she begs me to do her hair intricately and to wear makeup. After a failed experiment with real makeup that I thought she’d use only for dressup, I’ve banned all real makeup except for lipgloss- and she put its on obsessively every day. She also cries that she can’t wear high heels.

I will admit that I LOVE makeup- but in an art form/ punk sort of way. I make sure to NEVER tell my daughter I wear it to feel “pretty” etc., and that I wear it because I think putting it on is fun. As far as clothes are concerned I have ALWAYS been a jeans and t-shirt gal, and although I own a couple pairs of heels for special occasions, I don’t even wear them to those special occasions. My go to shoes are a very beat up pair of Vans slip-ons.

My daughter has to try on all her outfits in front of a mirror and will sometimes angrily rip her clothes off if she doesn’t like the way they look. I never do this! Sure I’ll try on a couple of outfits before going to work or going somewhere fancy to make sure I look put together, but any other time I just grab a clean t-shirt and whatever pair of black yoga pants is closest to me.

When my daughter was younger I dressed her exclusively in gender neutral- and traditionally “boy”- clothes, because her interests were in vehicles and dinosaurs and skulls, and that’s what she wanted to wear. I don’t know what changed. The only “princess” movie I’ve ever shown her is Frozen, and while she may have watched other princess movies at her grandparents house she doesn’t have an interest in them. She only likes to play with her cars and trains and stuffed animals.

My husband says her preoccupation with her appearance is my fault because I’m a beauty junkie, but I don’t think that’s fair because her interests go far beyond wearing makeup. What is going on here?!?! I didn’t think this was going to start until she was a tween at most. I feel like I’m totally failing her in a body-positive, feminist mom sort of way!

Your husband is being unfair. Most kids go through phases of clothes obsessions—at ages 4 and 5, my sister literally wore the same pair of overalls every day for almost a year, and my brother had to be wearing at least eight shirts at a time for a while.

I understand the horror you must feel, but you’ve already run through possible influences that could be artificially creating the girly obsessions, and it doesn’t seem like there are any. I say as long as she’s picking this, roll with it while sticking to your guns on no makeup/heels. (Heels?! She sounds like a true challenge rn.)

Thanks for the reassurance! I think he’s being unfair too and I think we probably need to go to counseling because I think he’s really holding this against me!

I want to let my daughter be her own person. I feel like if I were to say “you’re too concerned with how you look so I’m going to take all your dresses away” that’d be, well, really awful.

As cliche as it sounds I learned that I am strong than I think I am. A few years old I ended up homeless after my relationship broke down due to my mental illness. I had tried to commit suicide and was living in a homeless shelter but will help of a fantastic charity and very lovely lady called Elaine I got through it.

Read anything good lately? I’m currently about 2/3 of the way through “Luckiest Girl Alive”, which I only heard of when the author wrote a piece for Lenny. The reviews for it are so-so. I think it’s ok. The thing kind of took me by surprise but I wonder if it even belongs in the book.

So, any recommendations? Jezebel book club over here!

Time for another nail post, since I’m currently at my favorite nail place. The owner is wonderful. She always offers tea, water, etc. when you walk in. Tonight she’s running behind, and I’ve been waiting for like half an hour. I don’t mind, because the salon has a great ambience and she’s awesome to chat with. I joked that she should serve booze. She excused herself to the back and came back with a glass of wine for me! :)

Also, my assistant at work is amazing. She and I bond over our love of nail polish. Her roommate works for a beauty mag and gets a ton of free samples. They were culling their collection, so the assistant brought me a bunch of high-end nail polish! Dior, Chanel, Deborah Lippmann, Butter London, Nails Inc... Heaven. I’m currently waiting for the nice ladies here to put Chanel 605 Tapage on my nails.

    Show us your manicures!

Okay I’m just going to vent here:

WHY THE FUCK ARE GROUP PROJECTS LEGAL?! THEY SHOULD BE CRIMINALIZED. For people like me who actually want to get an A for the thousands I’m spending on an education, they are the single worst thing in existence. There are always at least 2 people who don’t do shit, and then usually only one other person who has any competency. But I won the lottery this time and got a whole group who didn’t do shit! So I just crammed out 10 additional pages to my agreed upon 2 because people didn’t do shit at all.

Of course I crushed them because I’m awesome, but I hate that I have to depend on others for a good grade. It is the fucking worst and group projects should be banned.

Also, the research paper was about how to solve cyber bullying and I’m pretty sure my paper did not do shit and cyber bullying is sadly still very much around.

Okay, now I’m going to drink an entire bottle of red wine and eat my weight in pasta. And probably watch the shit out of some make up tutorials.

Group projects are the worst. I could survive them a bit in undergrad because for some reason I thought that they would help prepare me for working on teams in the real world. But now that I’ve worked in the “real world” and am back at grad school, I see how they are worthless and stupid and prepare you for nothing at all. I hate them. I am taking a few online courses and an online group project is the worst. On one project I’m pretty sure this guy made his dad do his homework.
