The shared intellectual ethos of this conference was “Listen to women and the words that come out of their mouths for once in your fucking life and do not just focus 100% on holding them accountable for the men in their lives, even if doing so for a prolonged period gives you a ‘disconcerting and slightly queasy feeling’”

    Guess what? You failed!

    We’re all so surprised Hamilton.

to the family of George W. Bush,

You went to a conference with a billion different random women and the only thing you could think to write about was a man?

I don’t find Laura Bush inspiring but she didn’t invade Iraq. It seems like there was some other stuff going on to talk about other than what Laura Bush didn’t do.

a summit celebrating—as far as I could make out—women, with no further claim to intellectual coherence.

Do you think the seeming randomness of the conference could be because you are used to living in a world where you know people like you could be anything and can’t imagine a situation where that would need to be highlighted?

Seriously. Of course, heaven forbid HamNo treat the situation like a conference of men. You know, looking at each as an individual and criticizing the actual things that they do and say themselves. Rather, he’d rather shit on the whole group because they included people being held responsible for other people he doesn’t like.

Well, if it’s any consolation, I can think of a few ways to approach this write up that could have been worse.

How I Failed At Getting Laid At A Conference Full Of Women

      or

      Bitches, Amirite?

Alternatively, a more accurate title might have been:

How I Went To Woman’s Conference And, As Men Are Wont To Do When It Comes to Women Talking, Missed the Whole Damn Point

Which, hey, I’ll be the first to stand up and confess guilt to frequently missing the point when it comes to women talking about things that are important to them. Just ask my wife. I know that’s a yukyuk sitcom joke, but damn it all if it isn’t the truth.

That is of course why I would have begged off of this assignment if it had been given to me.

It is astonishing to me that in the areas like global health— which by all accounts present some of the most urgent humanitarian crises— leaders are so often recruited in a way that is baldly nepotistic. Both Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush hold positions of prominence in global philanthropy that are way out scale with their education and experience.

Wait, what? A bunch of women with different political perspectives and different suggestions on how to combat international problems are all coming together to one place to support each other in their endeavors? THIS IS BULLSHIT. WHY AREN’T THEY FIGHTING?!? STOP PRETENDING LIKE THE DIFFERENCES IN OUR BELIEFS CAN EVER BE MOMENTARILY IGNORED FOR THE BETTERMENT OF SOCIETY!!

In what way did any disparate groups try to solve any problems? This was a conference of lectures and interviews on unrelated topics for the purpose of corporate branding.

Do members of the Bush family really deserve the support of Turkish anti-violence activists or First Nations advocates? Or, in fact, fucking anyone at all?

Honestly, HamNo’s “You’re doing leftism wrong” schtick is pretty annoying at this point, but any event that has the Bushes as guests of honor can fuck right off.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that a Bush founded the Global Health Corps. The essay questions on the application and the description of how it works very clearly indicate that the whole enterprise is for idealistic idiots with delusions of revolutionizing the world who want to feel like they’re doing something while really being completely out of their depth.

If you can’t tell, I’ve started the application two years in a row before abandoning both times due to it being clear that it wasn’t interested in anyone who values professionalism or following best practices (which is a problem given that my MPH was in statistics and that’s a topic that demands you follow best practices rather than pull “creative” solutions out of your ass).

“If you raise your kids right,” she said, “nothing else matters.”

Right...it doesn’t matter whether you have to work multiple jobs in order to support them, whether they have access to schools with dedicated teachers who teach something other than how to take a test, or whether you can provide them with healthcare. Just tell them to be good people and the rest will take care of itself.

She’s such a great parent that she raised a spoiled rich daughter who was arrested while in university (while her father was president) but was still able to get her a job on morning television though she had zero skills, experience, charisma, and personality. Brava!

“Raise your kids right, and nothing else matters.”

Empty feel-good backhanded-crap to appeal to the egos of harried women who should be demanding better from their communities, but feel like bitches when they do. Just raise your kids right, and it won’t matter that the water is full of lead, or worse, because of corrupt politicians; it won’t matter if they go into crippling debt to try and qualify for a job that will pay them enough to live on; it won’t matter that they could be pulled over by dirty cops and end up either killed or entrapped in the nightmare maze of our broken legal system.

“America rewards those who work hard and are good people”, so if your kids don’t go on to be rewarded with good jobs, good educations, or good lives, then you must not have raised them right. Oops, the end.
