How dare a political columnist try to come up with an explanation for a political phenomenon! Outrageous!

I rewatched this recently. This is one movie I would actually like to see a remake of. But still with Eddie Murphy in the lead role.

Having a position where one has a disproportionate ability to spread’s one’s message is pretty much the strongest form of privilege going today.

Watching privileged White people call out other White people for being priveledged has got to be the most mind-numbingly stupid part of this whole primary process.

Idk who in the Clinton camp thought identity politics was the way to go...

“Still, Chait seems to fall into a line of thinking that has become quite common amongst well-meaning white people—that is: all black people aren’t the same!”

I’m assuming you meant “all black people ARE” rather than “AREN’T”? Otherwise this piece seems to be meaningless. Actually it still seems meaningless to me. I mean, you can shit on Chait all you want, but his argument was perceptive and it can’t be rendered illegitimate that easily.

I’m a 55 year old black guy, grew up in South Carolina and I get a chuckle out of the Bernie supporters and their devotion to progressive purity. When faced with the prospect of pragmatism or purity, those of us who actually had to deal with the aftermath of idealistic losses, know how important it is to vote with your head and not your heart.

I read the column skeptically, but this isn’t deserved. I suspect this Gawker post was inevitable the second Chait picked this topic.

All election analysis is overly reductive. All of it. About every demographic group you can imagine. To critique it is to critique the mores of journalism. The same mores tha Gawker announces slavish devotion to every time they post to JOURNALISMISM.

Pareene should know better. But Hamilton and Sargent have probably never heard the word “No” in their lives.

Gawker literally published a piece by a white-as-snow writer explaining why BLM was “dumb” to criticize “their best friend”, Uncle Bernie, not too long ago. Did they think we’d forget that quickly?

He goes on to say that these types of voters are the “ultimate expression of privilege.” Jonathan Chait is basically calling black Bernie Sanders supporters Oreos.

Holy shit dude, that is 100% not at all what he’s trying to say. Your reading comprehension is deplorable if you truly think that’s the point of this particular paragraph:

That refusal to accept the necessity of compromise in a winner-take-all two-party system (and an electorate where conservatives still outnumber liberals) is characteristic of a certain idealistic style of left-wing politics. Its conception of voting as an act of performative virtue has largely confined itself to white left-wing politics, because it is at odds with the political tradition of a community that has always viewed political compromise as a practical necessity. The expectation that a politician should agree with you on everything is the ultimate expression of privilege.

I hate Chait as much as any political writer but to use your own false interpretation laced with a loaded term to knock him down is hack writing at its worst.

Like his preferred candidate, Chait was a major liberal Iraq War booster. Isn’t that enough to never listen to him again?

        Yep.

On Saturday, Bernie Sanders was scheduled to speak to a crowd of thousands of supporters in a Seattle park. He never did; the event was shut down after a handful of protesters disrupted it in the name of “Black Lives Matter.” This was remarkably dumb.
