Parental leave is an egregious slight against non-breeders. We already subsidize your bastards with school, health care, etc. Now we have to pick up the slack at work while you get paid the same do to something you chose to do? This is an abomination.

someone once said “i don’t have kids and have no problem with paying more taxes for schools, because i don’t want to live in a nation of idiots”

      i like that perspective.

That’s fine. I pay those taxes (although they still make me sad). Adding another cost (taxes to subsidize the cost of their salary and work to fill the gaps in their absence) of parenting to non-parents seem ridiculous. Now, if you just mandated extra paid vacation for all, I would be game, but if it only applies to parents, it seems rather unfair.

6 whole weeks?! Cause kids are usually pretty self-sufficient at a month and a half.

It’s so fucking upsetting that this is actually progress.

Yeah. Compare Sweden: 68 weeks’ leave.

These European states with long leave times of say 30+ weeks have very low payouts. You likely get 80%-100% of minimum wage. They all have very low ceilings. If you are working a middle class job you still likely have to cut that leave short.

Obviously still better than the US...

Can we make that retroactive? I’ve always wanted to hike the John Muir trail and need a decent block of time so let’s get the state legislature on this. I have a couple kids I’d like to cash in for some paid time off. Sure, one of them is a grown woman who’s now in college, but I’m sure that’s a little detail that we can gloss over, right?

Right? I am really glad this is all happening but I’m done having my kids and would have appreciated having my time off paid 100%.

Ha, even in Canada we don’t get 100%. I had a measly 97% coverage >:/

(seriously kidding - but all Canadians can access the federal Employment Insurance plan with 6 months employment, which tops you out at about 50-55% of your income / or $1000 per month, approximately, and then a lot of employers will top up EI - mine topped me up to 97% for a year, which is one of the best plans, but then I’m thoroughly unionized...).

Look at that US, unions and taxes = benefits and happy workers and a functioning economy, who knew??

Due in like a week (Ughhhh get out already) and I’ll be taking 7 weeks off (only paid by using 6 weeks of accrued sick time and a week of saved up personal days). Husband actually gets 3 weeks of paid paternity leave (which doesn’t come out of sick leave or vacation, it’s just free paid leave which is bonkers to me). And then we get to start paying $1400/month for childcare. This is doable for us without too much hardship but idk how the shit anyone else manages it.

Honestly I have no idea how your average person affords daycare. The window on my own fertility is rapidly closing, and the fact that I seriously cannot afford to send a kid to daycare is one of the big reasons why I’ll probably remain child-free.

There can be a pretty giganto range of prices, depending on what you want. Or where you live. I only wanted to look at centers and ended up picking the priciest one because I liked it the most. I have a friend who only wanted to look at home based care (and she knew another family who used them and could verify it wasn't terrifying) and she spent $600/month. Which is still a lot, but definitely less. And it does get less expensive as kids get older.

Times they are a-changin’ and I am fucking GLAD.

(I am angry there is no animated gif of Christina Applegate in her seminal role as Sue Ellen Crandall in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead saying “Times they are a changin’”)

Hi Kellie, please help me! I had to reset my browser and lost my stupid burner password and now I am grey, missing my formerly black font, bestowed upon me by Mark Shrayber when he was high on pain meds. Please make me black fonted again. this is an unbearable sadness.

San Francisco lawmakers had chosen to take up the issue partly because there was little hope of change at the national level.

As depressing as that sounds, here’s hoping that this will at least further the conversation on that level. I don’t even plan on having kids; this is still a good thing- a needed thing.

Hopefully this will be a trend as more and more companies realize that these sorts of things help attract and keep high-level talent. In tech stuff at least benefits are one of the major selling points, so if states/federal won’t step up some companies are happy to. My company will give me 12 weeks paid (with possibility for more if I need it) when I give birth, and my health coverage is so good that it will cost me nothing out of pocket to have this child.

It drives me bonkers and makes me so sad when I’m reading pregnancy forums and see how hard it is for people. Women so grateful for 2 weeks off, and crippling hospital bills to boot. I’m lucky to be around people that value my work, trust me to get people trained up to handle my work while I’m gone without any kind of guilt trips.

I work at a credit union in Oregon and we aren’t big by any stretch of the imagination, but we do offer a pretty killer family leave ... option? I don’t really know what to call it. Anyway, you can bring your baby to the workplace for 3 months or when they start to crawl, whichever comes first.

Granted, i hate children and am dreading the day my coworkers decide to have more kids, or first kids, and i have to hear a screaming fucking baby at work for hours, but I still think it’s a nice thing to do for employees. That’s why the longest standing employee has been with our CU for over 40 years. I was surprised when I heard of the longevity here and that there were even positions open.

I’d rather my coworkers take a year off and take care if their kids rather than bring them to work. I vote yes on this forever and for everyone.
