I’m also 6-8. The other day this old man asked me what size I was and I was like, “Uhhhh...” And before I could say I wasn’t telling him he was like, “You’re about a LARGE aren’t ya?” And I was just like “............”

My body is so conventionally average looking it was just... THE NERVE.

I’m the same size. I would have punched that old man in the throat. (As long as I wasn’t running late for lunch, of course).

In Bernie’s defense, “yuuuuge” just means “really good" in Bernese, so maybe he just miscommunicated.

So not only does the booklet cost $12.99 but it also contains recycled content. So Glamour wants to overcharge plus sized women for old information.

This was my main takeaway from this, honestly. Why is this issue more than three times the price? Does it come with Tom Hiddleston’s phone number?

I don’t know why Glamour thinks they have to put labels on any of these women.

TBS, I am 5'6" and weigh 135 lbs and wear a size 6. I’d like to know where Amy shops that a 5'7" 160 lb woman (her words) is getting into a size 6, or 8 for that matter.

I get it, but if you look at her build, I was shocked that she’s 160. She looks 5'7 and 140 to me :/ She definitely carries the weight in a way I’m envious of.

Yeah, I agree with that, I’m about her size and I generally wear a 10-12. But all the same, I don’t consider her “plus” sized, I consider her to be average. (Yes, for a MODEL, she’s “plus” sized, but she’s not a model). If we have to label everyone, maybe we need to start calling models "minus" sized.

I completely understand what Amy is trying to say, but can we also acknowledge how sad it is that young girls (who aren’t plus sized) even thinking that they might be plus sized is considered bad for their self esteem?

Sure, and it is sad either way. Size numbers are so varied and arbitrary across countries - and so is the term “plus sized”, which is just loosely thrown around at random women who aren’t as skinny as models.

12.99? Are you fucking kidding me?

Also, I try really hard as a fat not to be offended when small people are called plus sized even though I think ‘If they are plus sized, WHAT THE FUCK ARE THE REST OF US?!’ I know, I know, it is a spectrum BUT STILL.

Which has nothing to do with this. This is just glamour calling her something she obviously isn’t. Being plus sized is not a bad thing but being labeled something you aren’t, that people could look at and say OH THAT IS WHAT PLUS SIZE LOOKS LIKE, isn’t cool.

What I am trying to say is, Fuck glamour. I am spending my 12.99 on a new lipstick.

The language of “plus size” is really fucking awful. Women are women, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

I read somewhere that Christina Hendricks gets real pissed when people refer to her as plus sized so this might have been a faux pas for Glamour in more than one way

Did a little searching, turns out I read that here on Jezebel

Nope - don’t call her “curvy” either.

Maybe five years ago I read a quote from her where she said she felt insulted when called “curvy” because she felt it was a euphemism for “fat.”

I just furiously googled this but couldn’t find it. I vividly remember her remark because “curvy” had become so commonplace, I was genuinely surprised to learn someone found it offensive . . . and made a mental note to myself to think twice before using it.

So if you don’t want to irritate Christina Hendricks, both “full-figured” and “curvy” are out.

Guy here, so forgive my ignorance -why hasn’t the fashion industry adopted a more measurement based system of sizing for certain articles of clothing for women? Wouldn’t offering the same dress in varying sizes for chest-waist-butt make it easier for consumers rather than a single “size” number? When I buy jeans I know pretty much the exact same length x waist I’ll wear, and what cut I enjoy the fit of from a majority of retailers. Same thing with dress shirts (size x neck x sleeve x waist). Why hasn’t the fashion industry moved to similar methods that might make it much easier for a women to find the best fit for her body type in an article of clothing?

Welcome to vanity sizing! I think it partly has to do with psychology. Like, people can say “I’m a size whatever!” and feel good about themselves. It is frustrating, but at least online a lot of times you can find actual measurements to go with the sizes.

I've noticed that whenever I shop online, the sizing chart will give those exact measurements to better help people find their correct size.

This just makes me think that Glamour believes everyone that isn’t stick thin is plus size. Like she said, absolutely nothing wrong with being plus size. But having someone who is 6-8 labeled as plus size in your magazine is just reflective of how out of touch these fashion magazines are with women that are in the real world.

I haven’t read Glamour in years but one reason I stopped was how much acclaim they wanted for putting one size 10 model in each issue. “LOOK WE’RE BODY POSITIVE! SEE! SEE! LOOK AT HER! WE’RE PROMOTING YOUR SELF ESTEEM! NOW GO BUY THIS SHIT WE’RE ADVERTISING!”

Redbook just got rid of the term “plus-size” for good and that’s exactly what they do. They have fashion features where there’s several women, all shapes and sizes. In their latest issue there’s a fashion feature featuring only a “plus-size” woman but it’s never mentioned. She’s just a lady wearing clothing!

I know, like, Redbook, who cares? But I think they get a bum rap. Some cool stuff going on in that magazine.
