When I hear about female humans who are practicing Catholics, I am always shocked. Thanks, Catholic guys! Every sperm is sacred! We are but vessels....

There is a significant percentage trying to bring change from the inside.

I’ve met quite a few women who were anti-abortion and would self-describe as pro-life. Most were religious, but not all.

They’re coming from a wholly different philosophy about the nature of life and the ethical value of a fetus.

I think they’re wrong, ultimately, but we haven’t done the best job of easing their core fears that somehow abortion might be the equivalent of infanticide.

So the MORAL thing to do is take a mother away from her child that is actually a living, breathing person on this earth.

    Okay.

Yes, who gives a fuck about the actual living, loved, cared for human child here? We’re discussing the much more important fetuses.

You know those times when you just can’t let something slide? Those signs.... “Women are safer without it.” It’s an outright lie. If people have to lie to convince people of their side, they’re on the wrong side. I just can’t let this pass without calling it out.

Also, the fuck is with the accompanying picture? Safer cuddling up with that baby they didn’t want? Safer AFTER the risk of pregnancy, complications, and birth has passed? Safer being in financial or emotional distress? Yeeeaaaah, Okay.

Abortion is 100% illegal here as well and I've had people argue that we do not need to allow abortion in case of danger to the mother's life because mortality rates related to pregnancy are very low. Women dying from illegal abortions don't matter to them, even when it's so very obvious that many, if not all, of them could've lived if they had had legal access to a safe abortion.

    Cool.

This woman was so desperate not to have this child that she POISONED HER FUCKING SELF. And the response of her government is to put her through a prosecution. Good for them.

I feel the need to clarify that “poison” appears to be just the charge. These are common abortion drugs. I took misoprostol for a missed miscarriage. It wasn’t poisoning. It would certainly be preferable if she was taking the drugs with a doctor’s instruction, but the drugs themselves can be a great alternative to surgical abortion.

As a Brit I am SO GLAD you’ve covered this story. The situation in Northern Ireland is awful and it’s outrageous that women there are treated differently to those of us elsewhere. Get your shit together, Stormont.

Gay marriage is the same, NI won’t recognise them. After the Republic of Ireland voted for it in their referendum, NI politicians stubbornly remain against. So you could get married in England and be discriminated against in your own country over the border.

The problem is nothing will change as politicians from the other countries of the U.K. see no gains from intervening as it won’t get them votes from their own constituents. Also, the votes of Irish MPs matter when the government’s majority is so small.

Anyway, thank you for drawing attention to this and covering stories from my neck of the woods :)

“Crown prosecutor Kate McKay said that on 20 July 2014 [the police] were contacted by the woman’s housemates...”

Fuck these fucking assholes. Obviously the larger issue is Northern Ireland’s awful laws, but fuck these pieces of shit. To turn in someone for this...it boggles my mind. What a lack of basic empathy and understanding and humanity.

Also, you know that at least one of these assholes would probably get an abortion/support their partner in getting an abortion in secret if they found themselves in a bad situation at some point in their lives...crazy pro-lifers are always the biggest hypocrites when it comes to this.

Absolutely true. I knew a nurse that worked at a well-known abortion clinic in town. She said that more than once, the most ardent of protestors would quietly have an abortion one day, and be right back on the street outside screaming with placards the next day. Apparently they were comfortable with their own hypocrisy: other women with unwanted pregnancies were thoughtless sluts, whereas they themselves had merely “made a little mistake” and needed help. Fuckers.

It’s said that many anti-abortion protesters are feel there are 4 valid reasons for abortion - the mother's life is in danger, rape, incest, and their abortion.

well there are more Protestants then Catholics in northern Ireland.

In fact you will find parties like Democratic Unionists (dont let the name fool you), are the main ones against changing the abortion laws in northern Ireland. They are a protestant party Oh and the party is lead by Arlene Foster, so yea they have a female party leader shooting down the abortion laws.

Hahaha when I was a kid coming out of church everyone was swarming across the street to the high school parking lot and not using the cross walk. Some driver being held up by the inconsiderate churchgoing pedestrians hollered out his window”Gawddamned catholics!” Total family joke henceforth.
