Growing up in my lily white racist town, 90% of people who lived there thought black people have an extra muscle in their leg that lets them run faster. I wish I was lying.

And black people can’t swim. A coworker told me this, swore up and down it was so. She was from Kentucky and knew black people so it was from personal experience.

I’m black and I work for UVA Medical Ctr and will have my baby there in a few months—this does not inspire confidence. From what I hear childbirth hurts like a mutha, I don’t need some snot nosed resident holding back the drugs because they think I have a super uterus.

What worries me even more is that the source article essentially says “it’s great that the people who didn’t believe the falsehoods didn’t show bias elsewhere!”—and nothing about correcting the false beliefs in the people who had them. You mean they didn’t realize that meant they should send out a bulletin about this idiocy, stat? You mean their saying that maybe this could help them better things in the future actually needed to be that vague instead of saying something concrete like “don’t believe stupid racist shit, stupid”? Ugh.

This is some next level fuckery. If you’ve made it all the way to medical school with this shit in your head, you should not be given a medical degree.

You’re kind of burying the lede - actually just not including it at all - when it comes to the ramifications of this study. It showed that black people are systemically under-prescribed pain medication in America (although I expect this has to do as much with the implicit/explicit biases of doctors re: addiction than it does a conscious belief that blacks feel less pain). This is doubly egregious when one considers exactly which communities it is with the huge prescription pill problems (hint: not black ones).

Having medical insurance helps one acquire pain meds more than a racist Doctor does. Those numbers will change thanks to the ACA. I wonder if your views will as well?

If you’d care to look into the data, black patients are actually prescribed less than white patience once the doctors DO see them, even controlling for health care availability. This is a separate issue from access to care. Does that change your view? I do have to say this is the first time I’ve seen the “racism is exaggerated” meme combined with an “Obamacare is good” meme though, so points for creativity.

It’s so disheartening to read something this eye-opening and tragic, then skim the comments and learn that most peoples’ main takeaway was over a silly misspelling.

Not really. Nobody’s surprised by racism, especially racism that falls into already widely documented racist beliefs. Spelling something so basic so wrong is really surprising.

Honestly, I’ll take someone who writes “peatree” while condemning idiotic biases over an actual medical student who believes the bullshit documented herein. Hell, I’ll even take a doctor without racial bias who can’t spell Petri—as long as they’re not messing up on my prescription.

Thank you for being awesome! I sincerely mean that.

I live in WV and right after I was laid off from work, (I miss my BCBS insurance) I ended up having a severe unexpected episode with uterine fibroids. The pain was so bad I could barely walk (bled non-stop as well). I initially refused to go to the hospital because of the reason(s) listed in the write up above. I cannot recall a time outside of having my daughter where I have been treated kindly by a doctor at any of the hospital’s here.

What made it even worse the fucking doctor the doctor NEVER suggested pain medication. I had to request it then nurse chimed in and told me to get over-the-counter ibuprofen. If ibuprofen worked, I would not have gone to the ER!!

I’ve spoken with women who are white and they’ve always been given top notch meds for even the slightest pains.

I have decided that unless my limbs are falling off, I’ll stick to working out, eating non processed foods, and basically do all the things racist people believe brown and black people don’t do to live a healthy life.

Yeah, that IS a little ... weird. I read Gawker every day. While it might slow down the posting process a little bit, it’s worth it to have at least one more set of eyes on an article to avoid some pretty silly writing mistakes.

Unless they did. In which case, yeesh!
