While this isn’t for me, the less-snarky aspect is that it is encouraging community in a society that is ever-more less-communal. As a young adult after college I moved to the other side of the country, lived alone, and had no community. This is one positive side of housing like this.

That’s a fair point. What I would argue is that we don’t need high-priced dormitories to create community; we need practice at getting outside of our own shells and an infrastructure that is less centered around a nuclear family. Admittedly, my own experience in living as an adult (albeit with a very solitary roommate) is in the South, where I can tell you what my cashier at the grocery store is studying in college (it’s Nursing, by the way), so I’m coming from a different cultural context. But I’d still like to think that we as people can do better than living in an expensive, grubby dorm room for the sake of some social interaction.

All true... but also don’t need to move to NYC and deal with expensive housing options at all. lol

I dunno i get it tho

like if i were moving to a new city, and this was a month to month option that mirrored what I would pay for in rent, I’d totally do it and use it to meet people and get situated before finding something more permanent.

I 100% don’t get the snark. Life can be lonely AF and not all of us like being glued to our Laptops commenting on Jezebel all day eating cheese and intermitenly checking out cats on Neko Atsume. Community living is great but hard to carry out in cities, as long as the price is reasonable this is a fab alternative

Does it cost $1375 or $2,000 a month to live here? If I was 22 years old, and getting a first job salary and lived somewhere with decent amenities I could hack it. What’s the difference between this and sharing a small 2 BR in the East 90's?

Eh, I wouldn’t call it a flop house. However, I’d be interested in what the place looks like furniture and fixture wise after a year or two. If it’s ikea quality, shit’s gonna look pretty grim and broke dick.

Sharing amenities with people who are not significant others/family members is a terrible idea, because it’s that much harder to yell at them for being selfish assholes.

Exactly, if my husband leaves dishes laying around, I have no problem telling him to cut it out. But someone I don’t know? I have too big of a problem with confrontation for that.

It’s not paying more though... 1brs are like $3200 in NYC. I guess you can find Sub-$2k apartments in Flatbush or something...

... isn’t $1375 for your own room with facilities actually a pretty great deal in New York City these days? Maybe it’s not on Manhattan proper.

“What will make you energized and motivated to be awesome today?” he said in an interview with Wired. “Is it an awesome shower in the morning, is it a great breakfast, is it a beautiful view? Or is it all of those things together? Do you prefer to watch a movie on an iPad by yourself, or in a room full of 50 people? You need to be able to enter these kinds of social experiences with options.”

How is a shower considered a social experience? Did they build a bunch of those privacy-free, high school locker room showers?
