I have never understood the benefit of having parallel state and federal court systems in the modern age. Why not just mush them together? Also, police powers should not be the prerogative of state governments. Police should be nationalized and they should roll up to the Justice Department somehow.

Hey @Paterk, tell me again how the South, particularly South Carolina, is unjustly maligned! Oh, that’s right, it’s because all those scapegoated Southerners are being told by uppity Northerners how shitty they are, because they couldn’t POSSIBLY be responsible for their own actions.

They’re in contempt of court, we can’t have debtor’s prisons.

IT really doesn’t matter what you call it... prison time is prison time. Let me throw you in a cell for failure to pay, and see if you care what it’s called.

Punishing the poor for being poor is the favorite pass time of a lot of folks in this country.

Look people, we’ve been clear about this time and again: The ONLY important Amendment is the 2nd and that part of the 1st that says Jesus is the Official Sky Wizard of ‘Murca. I am getting tired of explaining this.

Do you see any soldiers quartered around here? No? That only means that The Big Third is in full effect.

I'm beginning to think that South Carolina might have some unresolved issues left over from the war of northern aggression.

I just looked it up because I was interested, but we have just four municipal courts in Michigan, all in the old-money Pointes right outside of Detroit. Most cities decided to switch to regular district courts when those were legislated into existence in 1961. How many does South Carolina have?

We also still have magistrates in district courts, but they are under supervision of a chief judge in a district court. Is this not also the case in SC?

Nevermind, found that there are about 200 magistrate courts (with 312 magistrate judges) and another 200 municipal courts (249 municipal judges) in the state of South Carolina.

Sweet mother of god. Yeah, this is different than my state, and this is a gross abuse of the idea of municipal/local courts.

It’s not that so much as that they’re horribly outdated - recall that once upon a time people got around on horse and buggy (or foot) on really crappy roads - going to the county seat might be a multi-day journey in and of itself - and so, municipal courts were born to deal with the less serious stuff.

It’s called the circuit court because those judges used to actually ride around on a circuit visiting places periodically in order to conduct judicial proceedings, anywho...

Anyone who’s ever been caught in this poverty spiral knows how Kafkaesque it can be. Can’t pay a parking ticket, turns into the car getting towed, turns into losing your job, before you can even bat an eye. When you throw criminal charges into the mix, it gets even more nightmarish. Buddy of mine was just arrested for an outstanding warrant from 1992! It was a bench warrant for failure to appear to pay a parking ticket. Turns out he had paid the ticket, but there was an administrative glitch, and he was ordered to appear in court to pay the summons. When he didn’t appear, because he had already paid the ticket, the warrant was issued in a town where he lived for 9 months. Moved away and had no idea until he was arrested last weekend. Would’ve spent the weekend in jail if he couldn’t afford to post bail.

Spoiler: I’ll bet money the vast majority of the people who end up in these courts are POCs who get hauled in on bullshit charges and are then locked into the criminal justice system (and out of being productive members of society) forever after.

I work in the legal field in SC, and I’ve previously worked in criminal defense. I can tell you that everything in that article is accurate, and more allarming, it’s not even scratching the surface of the problems in my lovely homeland.
