Prisons get paid by the prisoner. The longer they stay, the more money...with the possibility of creating larger prisons.

Prisons for profit. What could go wrong?

There are some things that should have no profit. Unfortunately, in this profit-centric society, no one will step up to take on those duties.

Government run prisons are supplied by for profit businesses and when the state gets more money, the keeper of the cheese has more power.

It's almost like the war on drugs is a helpful premise for the mass incarceration of society's "undesirables", rather than a good faith effort aimed at protecting the public health of the nation.

But tell me again about how we’re all indebted to the cops for “keeping us safe” which is why we have to look the other way when they kill darkies, you see.

Tell me how this kept me safe, white people.

gotta boost those arrest stats some way; and it’s so much easier to grab a junkie than take on a dealer (who might have some back-up muscle nearby) or even more likely able to run off. from photos it does appear a good number of those boys in blue wouldn’t be able to make a foot pursuit.

and, yet, the nypd is mystified why so many people hold them in such contempt..

Cops either look like Chief Wiggum, or so roided up that they look like they could tear the Manhattan white pages in half with their bare fucking hands.

Yes, it easier to pick up a junkie than a dealer. But what blows my mind in these cases is they already put in all the work to get the dealer. It would require the smallest extra effort to nab them.

In some ways, I think the NYPD (and PD’s around the country) can work with a good HR consulting company to restructure their pay scale/goals attribution/ quotas, etc. The reason why this undercover drug team did this is probably because they are measured against how many “arrests” they make. What they should do is make the benchmark something else. Maybe making it “amount of bust” or “sentence,” so this way they can focus on moving up the chain.

RAGE. RAGE. RAGE. AND MORE RAGE. Stop FUCKING ARRESTING ADDICTS YOU ASSHOLES. God DAMMIT. Lots of people are apparently not getting the fucking memo that this is NOT WORKING. Oh wait... yes it is. It gets the addict off the corner, into a cell (where, guess what? It’s now the state’s (ahem - taxpayer)‘s responsibility to pay for their incarceration, when Medicaid (we already fucking pay for that) could PAY FOR TREATMENT YOU DICKS........ God, Don't get me started on this shit. Rage.

        Numbers based policing.

It’s a lot like the public cock stroking of Jack Welch who turned around GE. Jack’s policies are a ‘good’ way to turn around a failing multi-national, but you can’t use those same techniques in a medium company or a large company that is working. Employees spend too much time and effort saving their asses. The whole company is focused on the next round of don’t-get-fired.

Similarly, numbers driven policing is about the quantity of arrests, not the impact of those arrests.

Either you a) Become an unquestioning protector of the system (military—can’t disobey orders); b) become an indentured servant of the system (racking up bills faster than you can pay them while enduring job insecurity—read as “can’t rock the boat”); c) go to prison (where you are completely powerless); or d) if you’re “lucky” to be born into wealth or are a psychopath, you can become a super-predator and prey off a-c.

They can’t find enough actual criminals, so they run ops to manufacture new ones. No different than the FBI using informants to dupe people into fake terrorist plots so they can go on CNN and say “Look! We caught terrorists! Stay afraid and keep giving up money!”
