There are occasions like this in which I welcome the expunging of a native culture by the adoption of Western cultural ideals.

So many cultures have yet to leave the 18th century. (Or earlier)

Okay, but which part of the western culture ideals can account for the 1 in five women who are raped and the 6% of rapist to ever actually serve time? Is rape culture part of the western cultural ideals you’re talking about too? Or are you talking about the actions of the aggressive soldiers because I have some articles and books you can read if you wanna hear about the things that have been done to female civilians in other countries by US and European soldiers in the name of spreading western cultural ideals.

Whenever I read about disturbing cultural practices, I always think of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. If a practice is cruel and unnecessary we should be willing to condemn it whether its part of our own culture or someone else's.

I agree. When I first heard of BH, it was in the context of learning that they were burning boys alive in their schools, and then shortly after, that girls were being taken. It’s been horrendous and overwhelming.

I, too, hope that these women and their families can get the support and help that they need to heal as individuals, as families, and communities.

Nah. We need to start a new Kinja with just Cute animals so the news can be the news and opinions can be opinions and people will have a place to go to get away and see animals.

I am certainly not opposed to a new Kinja with just cute animals all time. But since they jettisoned their other blogs I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon. Is it too much to just want a palate cleanser at the end of the night? This article is very important and I hope Jez continues to cover this and others like it, but they always seem to post the worst shit at the end of the night. Ending on a cute note doesn’t seem like too much to ask.

This piece by Sarah Topol is the most moving and humanizing account of the Boko Haram schoolgirl kidnapping that I’ve read. It’s stayed with me for many months. I wish we could do so much more for these women.

This is so unbelievably sad. The US should welcome these young women with open arms, should they seek asylum.

I would 100% let someone come live with me. I can’t even imagine the horror they’ve faced and once they are finally “free” they are treated like criminals.

I really object to the term “suicide bomber” when a person is forced to set off a bomb that was strapped to their body. We have to come up with another term. They are victims, too.

I haven’t thought about this! You’re so right. “Suicide Bomber” is so disrespectful when they were in fact forced to wear the bombs.

If I was looking at a lifetime in a rape camp, I’d probably be pretty eager to blow myself up too. I’m not sure they’re so much converted into assassins as they are desperately looking for a way out.

There have been reports of Yazidi girls who were enslaved by ISIS committing suicide, so you could be right about that.

I had a similar thought. As horrifying as it would be to become (as another poster termed it) a “weaponized hostage” and know that there will be innocent collateral damage, a part of me understands that it might be the better option for some of these women.

I can’t believe how fucked up the world is.

Only on this white feminist website would you get people advocating for colonialism instead of actually showing sympathy with the victims.

News flash : This isn’t about patting yourself on the back for caring about the survivors of these horrendous dehumanising crimes. It’s about sympathising with them. Not. About. YOU.

“Oh, god. These little girls were violently raped and assaulted, how do I deal with this horrible world? This is too much for me, let’s look at some cute animals, I just can’t bear feeling this way!”

It is also frustrating to see that the same people who will comment and say these atrocities need to be stopped also totally disagree with actual war with the people committing said vile acts. How exactly shall we stop this insane tide of extremism? Memes? Waggish Twitter comments? Come on. This has to be stopped and it ain’t gonna be pretty. Let’s all at least ball up and agree to the truth.

Couldn’t agree more. Never thought I’d find cute animals gifs so inappropriate, out of place, and disrespectful to the interviewed victims. And advocating for colonialism (my personal favourite: “It was the West that decided that slavery was immoral”) makes me feel even more depressed after reading this story.
