    jail people humanely

That’s where you lose a lot of Americans here. The fact is that prisoners aren’t human to so many folks, sadly.

You can barely get people to give a crap about the poor, sick, and homeless. They will never give a damn about the treatment of inmates unless it was flat out barbaric. Even then, those reforms better be cheap.

So, with the violation of the very definition of the term 'solitary' (and thus the supposed justifications for using it), we're basically left with the idea that it's just torture, or cruel and unusual punishment, which I believe there's some sort of ban on, if I'm not mistaken...

Almost all of the inmates are in solitary because they request so or are a danger to other inmates or are in danger from other inmates.

Which has nothing to do with whether or not they're treated inhumanely.

“If we cannot jail people humanely we should not be allowed to jail them at all.”

My counter: If people don’t want to live like that, then they shouldn’t commit crimes. Jail is supposed to be a deterrent: this seems pretty deterring to me. Mission accomplished.

Obviously jail isn’t a deterrent, no matter how awful you make it.

To MajMalfunction's point... medieval torture for crimes still saw people do crime. This is what happens. Oh, and you are startlingly ignorant. Not stupid, but ignorant - as in you are uninformed as to what your "policy prescription" implies. Also, you are uninformed as to the many and varied reasons people get locked up. Very few are Charles Manson types.... Anyway, say hi to Trump at the next rally you attend.

We need to blow up our whole prison system and start over from scratch:

I’m not in Illinois, but in my state’s prisons, we commonly double up inmates in administrative segregation (solitary) cells that are bigger than those at Menard. And while there are times that I have misgivings about inmates being housed in segregation, I really do not see how we could do it any other way. Right now, the majority of our seg population is made up of white supremacist gang members who are constantly targeting either rival gang members or sex offenders. The majority of the inmates I interact with every day (and I see a ton of them) are just trying to do their time quietly, but when you have certain men who are hellbent on violence, I really see no alternative to some sort of segregation.

So they pick enough fights until they get a solo cell? Really I find isolation to be barbaric, but if it keeps them away from the non-violent gen pop? not an easy answer.

Really, it should highlight how we need to deal with non-violent crimes in the US. And how our current jail system isn’t working. Putting everyone together is a death sentence for some, and just a crime-school for others.

How would you reform the system you work in?

Get rid of mandatory minimums, legalize drugs. I think that will go a long way to easing the systems overpopulation.

C’mon, if you’re gonna go with a NYC apartment joke, you gotta commit! You know…

“Doubled up in claustrophobic solitary cells? How much you think I could make doing that with AirBNB?” or,

“Is it rent stabilized at least?” or,

      “Exposed brick, and I’m sold.”

If we cannot jail people humanely we should not be allowed to jail them at all.

This is exactly it. We need prison standards and if a particular facility can’t meet the standards the court needs to identify those who are the biggest threats and release non-violent drug offenders to make room. It’s not fair to keep the court system funneling people into a full facility—the right hand needs to work with the left.

Oh, let's see ... they must have room for their prisoners and no doubling up in solitary confinement. How about having phychiatric staff to advocate for the mentally ill. Body cams on guards. Etc.

Those horribly small solitary confinement cells aren't as depressing for New Yorkers, because those would rent for $1700/month there.
