We have been a world leader in women’s soccer

literally not the best brag because some of your competitors require women to ask permission from their husbands to play. The british national team makes less that $20,000 a year!

congrats on your high-horse being the size of a miniature pony owned by lisa vanderpump, us soccer. congrats.

Maybe this lawsuit will encourage other teams to ask for the same treatment as their male counterparts?

i hope it does, but most other national women’s team have like less than half of the support that the USWNT does. i think it would have more of an impact if they were suing FIFA instead of USSF

    FUCK YEAH U.S. LADIES!

I personally laughed a little schadenfreude laugh when the US men failed to qualify for the Olympics. US Soccer has tried to raise the profile of soccer in the US by pushing the middling men’s game instead of promoting the stellar product that is our women’s team. The women are routinely overlooked and underpaid while they churn out successful season after successful season, and then US Soccer pats them on the head when they ask to be recognized with fair pay and adequate playing conditions. US Soccer should take a long, hard look in the mirror when they ask themselves just why soccer isn’t popular in the US.

Personally, I haven’t watched a men’s soccer game since Landon Donovan was screwed out of playing his last cup before retirement. So disappointed in their actions.

The most damning part is that the USSF just predicted in their own future budget report that the women’s team is likely to bring in more money over the coming years than the men’s team. Dagger.

Sometimes I think pay equality should be universally enforced across all sport genres irrespective of ratings. Maybe that will then force the powers that be to actively promote female games from a young age and we would finally see some equality in sport. Money talks after all.

It would either: 1) cause male leagues (soccer, basketball) to pay considerably less, or 2) bankrupt the female leagues. If they had to pay Lebron James money to the top WNBA athletes, the league would fold.

Yes I know. Which is also why I said ‘sometimes I wish’ and not ‘here’s a great idea’. The disparity is just so enormous between male and female teams but of course starts from a very early age. Girls just aren’t encouraged to play in the same way and frankly let's be honest, they don't have big options to live off their game either (minus a few very selected disciplines).

Realistically the women should be paid more than the men. They’re far better vs. their competition. They do their job better, period.

Devil’s advocating: The wage disparity for the national teams is in line with the wage disparity in the sport as a whole. All sports, really. Addressing it in this one single instance is progress, but it’s like treating one symptom of a disease. Until major stakeholders are able to extract equal revenue from both genders, equal pay in any real sense is a pipedream.

If you read Deadspin’s post on the subject, the USSF just released a report that they expect the women’s team to bring in more money over the coming years than the men’s team. Mostly thanks to the women’s continued stellar performance and ability to draw crowds while nobody ever seems to know which men’s team is going to show up to a game/tournament.

“The filing, citing figures from the USSF’s 2015 financial report, says that despite the women’s team generating nearly $20 million more revenue last year than the U.S. men’s team...”

This. THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY. Because whenever the argument about female athletes being paid nothing comes up, there is always some dipshit who is like “but they don’t generate any revenue.” And these figures are coming from US Soccer itself.

It is an absolute fucking crime that the USWNT brought in more revenue (and is projected to continue to bring in more revenue than the USMNT in 2016 and 2017) and doesn’t even have the same payment structure as the men, let alone similar pay. The fact that the men got paid last week to lose to goddamn Guatemala (I’m pretty sure that my high school team had a better back line), when the women get $1K for a big win is despicable.

Yes but in years in which you have competitions like the World Cup, the men’s team would attract more attention giving that it is a worldwide event seen by almost everybody. Or for example the special edition of Copa America that will take place in the US this year.

Except that US Soccer themselves is projecting that the US women will bring in more revenue than the men for the next two years...

Also, if the US men continue to play as they have been, no one is going to pay attention to Copa America because they aren’t going to get very far.

To be fair, if the men only got paid for wins, they’d make no money.

this is true about football in USA

I am making it a personal goal to attend at least one game of my local women’s professional soccer team this summer. I propose that all Jezzies adopt this same goal. Vote with your dollars, people!

The kicker for me this morning was when they appeared on the Today Show with their attorney, and Matt Lauer brought up “but what if it’s based on profitability”. I laughed out loud because apparently Matt hadn’t done any homework for this piece. The attorney stated what I knew - Women’s soccer kicks men’s soccer’s ass as far as popularity and profitability.

“As a matter of fact, the women’s Soccer Team made $16 million last year, while the men’s team lost $2 million.”

Then Lauer brought up whether they should go to Rio because of the Zika virus, and Hope Solo pretty much shut him down. “Let’s just focus on what we’re hear to talk about”.
