They’re also screening Reefer Madness to open up the conversation about legalizing weed.

Reefer Madness is hilarious while under the influence of one’s substance of choice, and I would highly recommend showing it a #LegalizeIt event. Good times all around.

They are also showing old Nancy Reagan movies in order to get a conversation about HIV/AIDS started.

We believe it is critical that all of the issues surrounding the causes of autism be openly discussed and examined.

I agree. Except vaccines are not a cause of autism.

YES. Discussion is good, but there is only so much that can be discussed about something that isn’t true before the only answer is “yup, still not true.” If this were a film about the anti-vax movement, that would be actually interesting! And could even show the side of the anti-vaxxers! They would still be WRONG, it just wouldn’t be propaganda.

Yeah, I love how people keep saying “we need to have the discussion” as if to imply there’s been silence and suppression of ideas up to this point. No! The discussion has been had. It was determined to be total bullshit. Move on!

What’s next? Do we need to have “the discussion” about this whole flat Earth thing?

I am only providing the opportunity for a conversation around the issue.

I hope the entire content of the discussion consists of the statement, “Andrew Wakefield is utterly full of shit and should be in jail.”

Right? Also, ‘conversation’ isn’t always productive. We can have ‘conversations’ about how the earth is flat, or how evolution doesn’t happen, or how my washer/dryer leads to an alternate dimension full of nothing but right socks, but NONE OF THOSE CONVERSATIONS ARE PRODUCTIVE. If you want to have a ‘conversation’ you better have some actual facts backed up by some actual science before you come to the table.

Or, it’s just a short conversation.

“I’m concerned that vaccines cause autism.”

“You don’t need to be. Despite decades of extensive research, there has been absolutely no link discovered between vaccines and autism.”

    What conversation?

Vaccinations have nothing to do with autism but has everything to do with preventing childhood diseases that used to lead to death.

What’s next? Washing your hands with soap and water causes autism?

And as I mentioned in the fast food automation comment thread, the folks at my local Burger King are quietly doing their part to fight autism!

I kinda get what they are saying. They want to make sure a variety of opinions are represented. The thing about this “opinion,” is that it is not just entirely false, but extremely harmful.

I think a good compromise would be to make them show a very clear and explicit disclaimer before showing the movie saying that none of this is backed up by factual medical evidence and his fraudulent results have never been reproduced in any other study conducted.

No, they shouldn’t show it all. His “opinion” is dangerous, and a complete lie. It isn’t just that there is nothing backs up what he says, it’s that all of the medical science says the exact opposite is true. Vaccines do NOT cause autism. Period. We don’t need to give him a platform, anymore than we need to give a large platform to the idiot that argued the Earth is flat. They are free to have any opinion that they want, but they are not entitled to their own facts. To pretend that opinions are as legitimate as facts is dangerous. To pretend that all opinions are equally valuable, is dangerous. They shouldn’t be giving a platform to a person whose sole intention is to, knowingly or not, lie for the express purpose of encouraging people to engage in risky behavior that WILL result in death.

Most of the times, the truth is gray. But sometimes, it really is just black and white. Right or wrong. Either you believe in gravity, or you are wrong. Either you believe that vaccines don’t cause autism, or you are wrong. Either you believe the Earth is round, or you are wrong. Not every opinion is of equal value, and some of them are not only wrong, but actively harmful.

Warning should be stronger than that. It should be that every reuptable medical organization agrees that there is no proven link between vaccines and autism. However, the decline in vaccinations due to anti-vax fears has lead to increases in the incidence of deadly childhood diseases and fatalities.

In that case, here are some other conversations that we should have:

    - Is water wet?

    - Do bears, in fact, shit in the woods?

    - Should Andrew Wakefield be forced to dig the many, many graves of people who’ve died from vaccine-preventable diseases?

Why would anyone care more about an actor’s opinion on this than the fucking doctor that created it? An actor makes his living pretending. If you take medical advice from an actor, you deserve the results. But the doctor, who went to med school, who studied this for years, and came to the conclusion that vaccines cause autism? That’s dangerous and scary. We’re supposed to listen to and trust doctors’ medical advice.

well, that’s why people are upset. It isn’t that he is giving advice, in fact de niro isn’t really giving any medical advice. It’s that he’s providing a platform for a known fraud and, coupled with the point you made that people tend to listen to and trust doctors, this is a problem. Even though he’s been stripped of his license, there are many, many people out there who listen to and follow what he is saying and it is dangerous.
