Let’s say one were to want to watch Larry Sanders again but it is no longer on Netflix.

Theoretically, how would one go about doing that

I would suggest checking out the network that owns it first. Usually they have a nice backlog of their older shows online for viewing. After that, you might need to get clever.

He shined at the self-referential, setting the stage for Seinfeld’s full-on self awareness. Witness Shandling on the X-Files, playing Garry Shandling playing Fox Mulder.

The scenes between Duchovny and Shandling on The Larry Sanders Show are so fucking good

He excelled at and was an early pioneer of the “meta” approach to modern scripted comedy. I loved how his sitcom not only broke the fourth wall with characters addressing the audience and being self-aware of their fictive natures, but completely demolished it by showing it was playing out entirely on a sound stage in front of a live studio audience, who were often included in the storyline.

The Larry Sanders Show is probably tied with Arrested Development as my favourite American series of all time. It is near perfect. My favourite moment is probably that episode with Hank doing the orange juice commercial and Larry saying “who d’you have to fuck to get this job?”

there’s no The Office (British or American) without Larry Sanders, let alone 30 Rock, or even Louie.

Without Larry Sanders there’s no Curb your Enthusiasm either, I don’t think.

Also: It’s Gary Shandling’s Show was great. The episode based on the Graduate is my fave.

Also also: the Gervais interview was horrible.

Wasn’t a fan of Shandling’s for a long time, and I recall one absolutely brutal trainwreck of a guest-hosting gig on The Tonight Show back in the days when Carson was still deciding on his successor.

But The Larry Sanders Show was note-perfect. It’s like he had this fully-developed fantasy of what his life would be like had he succeeded Carson (a fantasy that evidently included keeping Ed), and he was gracious enough to share it with us. Genius.

I liked his stand-up more after Larry Sanders, too. Possibly, I just felt more favorably-disposed, but I think he was less whiny, too. Smart comic with a keen eye. He’ll be missed.

He guest-hosted The Tonight Show so many times, that’s how he was able to develop The Larry Sanders Show. So, not only was Sanders based on himself, everything in the show was based on what he did for The Tonight Show - no fantasy was needed.

I know he was a frequent guest-host... I just remember that one night, though (and I’m fairly sure it was the last time he hosted, too). Not sure if it was nerves, or what, but he had as bad a night as you could possibly imagine for a Tonight Show host.

It was bad enough that you got the sense it was going to change the trajectory of his career, and maybe it did.

After going through this thread, I must say.....you people are hopeless.

The *BEST* was when Tom Petty was on ‘It’s Garry Shandling’s Show’ going to Vegas with them & sitting next to Garry’s memaw? I think it was. She was asking for $$ to bet with & he said ‘Don’t give it to her - she’s a black hole’.

That’s how I remember it anyways. If I find a gif/video I’ll post it. It was really funny. ;-)

YES!!!! I was just about to write about that episode and you beat me to it. And I remember it as you’ve described it, btw.

Some of the best episodes included Tom Petty — remember when he helped Jackie give birth to Blue Suede Schumaker?

Bummed is right. 20 years ago I delivered a couple of packages to him at his home which wouldn’t be a big deal but I can still remember it clearly because he was just so easy to get a smile out of and a really decent guy, even to the courier knocking on his door during dinner. RIP funny man. You were one of the good ones.
