What’s fucked up is North Carolina has a strong progressive movement in the Moral Mondays, though I haven’t heard much about them recently. The State is very Purple and could flip if the Liberals got off their lazy asses to vote in non-Presidential years. And participated in local government. It frustrating to listen to some Liberals, NOT ALL, moan and complain about places that like NC and do nothing to change it. (I know a lot of Liberals in NC ARE doing something, not talking about you!)

Can we hope for a brain/business drain as a result of this complete bullshit? Gotta hit them where it hurts.

From what I understand, most of the progressives are in college towns like Chapel Hill and the hipster enclave of Asheville. Much of the state is solid red.

How does anyone think they are going to enforce these laws against anyone other than children in schools? Which bathroom do these idiots think adult trans people are using right now? Nobody is doing a dick-check on the way into the men’s room.

They don’t want to enforce anything; they want to bully, intimidate and humiliate. That’s the whole point of passing unconstitutional laws.

Something tells me this may all be an elaborate plan for GOP lawmakers to start doing strip searches on the way into the women’s restroom.

Yeah, that is like the gayest bathroom I’ve ever seen — black tiling screams ‘ecstacy at 5 in the morning’ to me — so maybe not the best illustration for this example.

The whole ‘protect our women’ angle is so gross. Basically they’re willing to admit only men are dangerous and only if legally allowed in the same area as women. (Because attackers won’t go in there if it’s illegal???) All to pick on innocent citizens.

While I certainly understand why public bathrooms have been segregated by sex through most of civilization, (we are, after all, violent, sexually predatory male primates,) these laws are openly motivated by animus toward trans people. There’s plenty to criticize about trans culture and identity politics in my book (don’t we want to be exposing gender as a destructive, needlessly polarized social construct rather than something that essential to identity?), however none of it involves using the law to discriminate against them in their day to day lives. I don’t understand people who take oaths to uphold the US Constitution who turn around and pass laws motivated by hate of a particular minority group, to make their lives more miserable.

But they’re not segregated by sex, they’re segregated by gender. The signs on the door say men and women on them and have iconic representations of me and women on them. These are markers of gender, not sex.

And no, gender is not a destructive social construct. Gender is real, that’s why trans people exist.

Until very recently in human history, gender and sex were perceived as the same thing and so yes, locker rooms and bathrooms are segregated by both. It’s ridiculous to pretend otherwise. Whenever the door signs were created, they assumed penises would be in one room, vaginas in another. And that does still matter to people which is why this is a hot debate.

I think we’ll get farther in this debate when we admit we’re asking for a radical shift in thinking instead of just saying “Oh, those backwards conservatives!”

It gets better, it also bans any local minimum wage increases in the state.

And all this in special session. Because they just absolutely couldn’t wait to be bigots.

What was that about small government again?

This was all very surreptitious. It happened in one day. The Governor signed this bill into law at 10 PM at night.

Welp I guess I won’t be using public bathrooms in NC anymore out of protest in solidarity with trans citizens. That means I’ll have to shit in random people’s lawns I guess.

Or less random. Get ready NC GOP legislators. I LOVE White Castle and travel to Charlotte frequently...

Personally, I think McCrory being governor is already a big enough shit on our collective lawns that you adding more won’t change much.

If this is how lawmakers in North Carolina think bathrooms should work, I desperately want them to have to visit Sweden, where many of the public bathrooms are — gasp — unisex. They’d all wet themselves, literally.

Why do we even have different restrooms? I would understand if men’s restrooms had Australian Urinals(google it), but they do not have that in the US. We typically even have dividers on the urinals. The whole thing is just weird social convention.

I always posit this to my friends to make my point. A father has a 2-year old daughter. The little girl needs to go to the restroom. Where should they go? The men’s room or the women’s room?

You can still fit more urinals in the same space.

Why do they need more urinals?

Because men will, and do use the sinks if they have to wait.

I am proposing that we make a unisex restroom with multiple stalls/urinals.
