This state still sucks balls. I have no doubt that they will find a new, more inventive way to NOT help expectant mothers who are also, unfortunately, addicts.

I agree. I'm in northeast TN and I want to pull my hair out on a daily basis with the dumbfucks who think this kind of thing is a great idea.

Instead of doing something sensible like offering treatment for addiction and FREE, effective birth control to people who use drugs.

Like, first they’d have to allow/start a needle-exchange program, and then the needle exchange vehicles/clinics would also offer depo-provera or the patch and oodles of condoms with zero cost, and could offer referrals for LARC placement.

Criminalizing abortion. Criminalizing pregnancy. Criminalizing birth. I mean...what exactly are our options? Not have sex. But then how will the menz get the sexy times they’re entitled to?

Why, rape, of course. Even if we get pregnant, I hear our bodies just deal with that shit anyway.

“Health and drug treatment professionals agree that treatment for addiction is critical, but they also agree that bills that focus on punitive measures in order to coerce people into getting treatment simply are not effective. In fact, this law has harmed the very people it was supposed to help.”

    Duh.

Or, for a more nuanced reply, can we please start treating addiction as a medical problem that needs medical and psychological treatment instead of as a crime?

It’s almost like providing health care to people who need it (the infant AND the mother) is way more effective than throwing the mother in jail and the infant into government care!!!!

    Who knew?!?!?!

The law was meant to discourage punish pregnant women from using drugs

    There. FIFY.

Addictions suck. It’s terrible when babies are born addicted, but this is not helping anyone’s health and safety.

Holy shitballs, people. I try to be as PC as the next person but I am also a registered nurse. Drug addicts: Don't get pregnant and if you find yourself pregnant don't have a drug addicted baby. Yes addiction is a disease but that does not absolve the individual from all responsibility ESPECIALLY when the life of another is concerned. Sometimes abortion is the right thing to do. If you don't believe that go visit a drug addicted neonate in the NICU

But states are now making it even harder for women to get abortions. If you’re that bad off on drugs, you probably also have no means to drive to another state to get an abortion.

While I disagree with a lot of what you said (including the fact that there is such a thing as a “drug addicted baby” - suffering withdraw symptoms is not an addiction. A baby is not capable of having an addiction), you highlight an important piece of the hypocrisy. Law makers can’t make it difficult to obtain contraception/an abortion AND criminalize the pregnancy AND make it difficult to raise a child/receive necessary health care. You say “Sometimes abortion is the right thing to do,” but I guarantee you these law makers are also against abortion. They just want to criminalize poverty, control women’s bodies, and keep poor people poor.

I would like to think that Alabama would do away with this type of law but I know my state well which means they will only think of more ways to penalize pregnant women/new mothers.

Mobile here. My biggest fear when I was pregnant was that I’d test positive for THC and they’d take my baby. I know they created the law with crystal meth in mind, but they’ve abused it too much to be trusted. God only knows what whackadoo laws they’ll come up with in the next few years to make abortions impossible, prenatal care unobtainable, and casual drug users pay for the rest of their lives. Good ole Alabamie.

Hey, I’m a Mobilian, too! We’re actually amending our current laws because they were similar, but not enforced the same way. For example, Mobile County doesn’t prosecute for drug use while pregnant (I worked on fetal and infant mortality case reviews here and most of the time the provider didn’t even test; without any options for pregnant women and knowing that a lot of drugs have either no effects or short term effects in the infant they’d rather just not have any evidence of testing), but Morgan County and Shelby County prosecute aggressively. Last fall the governor called a group together to address the laws and make recommendations for best practices. I don’t know if that’s been released yet, but I’ll do some digging and come back if they have. Not to make it sound like things are peachy keen, but this is one area where our DPH is not into overly zealously hurting pregnant people.

GOOD. this keeps high risk births out of hospitals. pregnant women addicted to drugs NEED to have monitored births!!!

and the lack of treatment options for pregnant women are astounding. the large majority of treatment centers will not take a pregnant woman

““Being born drug-dependent didn’t kill these children,” Reuters reported. “Each recovered enough to be discharged from the hospital. What sealed their fates was being sent home to families ill-equipped to care for them.””

Oh silly people. Don’t you know that the only baby that is worth saving is one that is still a cluster of cells in a uterus? Out the womb and out the door - there are precious zygotes to protect from their woman shaped womb carriers. Once a baby is born God will look after troubled mother and child probably.
