with one unnamed person calling her situation a “soap opera” and “accusing her of flirting with her harasser.”

Yep, this is pretty much my exact experience with reporting sexual harrassment in academia.

Especially since to some creeps ANY communication is “flirting”.

I love how if a woman’s first instinct is to try to diffuse the situation (as it is for most women) that becomes ‘encouraging it’ aka flirting.

He sought an intimate relationship with Ms. Ravina, insisting that she meet him off-campus, touching her inappropriately, demanding that she compliment him, describing her as “sexy,” and indicating that he was “horny.”

Apparently this guy’s emotional development came to an abrupt end at 12 years old?

Sad thing is that I had lots of male friends when I was 12 yrs old and younger, and never once did any of them ever act even remotely this disgusting. Fuck men who think this is just "boys being boys". Lots and lots of "boys" never ever ever act like that.

Also, Glen Hubbard is a total asshole. He was interviewed for The Inside Job and he comes off as a cold dickwadd.

I do not know anything about the facts here. All I can say so far is that this sounds plausible, and that if you look at this guy’s photograph, he has the face of a sexual harasser and general douchecanoe.

Also, all business schools should be shut down, and folks who actually run actual businesses should be brought in to teach short courses in stuff they know about to college students, and other folks who need a further education should apprentice themselves to someone who actually runs an actual business. End of rant!

it seems like he didn’t even try with his defense??

“because I did a good thing and helped out, well, she’s saying I harassed her and decided to risk her entire academic reputation for no reason. Yep. This is why I don’t volunteer! Who knows what would happen then.”

Columbia doesn’t have an undergraduate business major. The business school is only there to teach MBA and business PhD students, and they famously don’t accept anyone who hasn’t already been out in “the real world” for several years.

She is never getting tenure now, effectively ending her academic career either way - which to academics is some life or death shit. It’s a big deal for her to file this lawsuit.

I know. I had a lawsuit case at my doctorate granting institution and people I trusted advised me not to sue because it would destroy my credibility and it would destroy the credentials of the other students. It IS life or death shit after you choose to live in poverty for 7 years plus. If you walk away, how can any of that have been worth it?

I’m probably not going to tell you anything you don’t already know (academia is like a cult), but browsing job postings was the best baby step I took towards leaving. We’re qualified for A LOT, and there isn’t any “hey you obviously love it enough to work for less, right?” bullshit. And at least with corporations you can expect shitty behavior from coworkers and bosses...it’s a slap in the face when academia pretends like exploitation is impossible (everyone’s so educated and progressive!). You haven’t wasted 7 years for nothing. I guarantee, degree or no degree, you’ve accomplished so much both as a person and professionally.

It’s going to be really telling when a gaggle of former female students and colleagues come forward with the same experience.

For crissake. This is business school, where I have to imagine the esteemed professors are aware of gender issues, discrimination, and sexual harassment in the workplace. How on earth could they dismiss her allegations? And I love his statement: The allegations are completely false. She made them up, ‘cause she’s got nothing better to do? That’s the first sign of a complete liar.

It is really telling that more than 20 tenured faculty came forward to complain about this case and try to intervene on behalf of Enrichetta... and there were 2 written petitions by other faculty members on her behalf... and yet nothing was done.

This is a description of well-premeditated harassment; if he did this to her, he almost certainly did it to other women. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if several more women came forward with similar stories.
