I love that, for these people, filling out a two page form is an "undue burden" but 48 hour waiting periods and making women drive 400 miles to the nearest Women's Health clinic isn't.

I don’t believe they’re arguing that filling out the form is an undue burden, but that it’s an affirmative action that results in the supplying of birth control, which is against their sincerely held religious beliefs. It wouldn’t matter if the form was two pages, one page, one sentence etc.. It’s not the burden of filling out the form but the fact of having to take any sort of action.

The more important aspect of this case is whether the necessity of contraception and the public interest in providing that contraception is greater than the burden on their religious freedom. It is. It absolutely is. Without contraception, women will die. With it, nuns will have to sign a form. Cry me a river, nuns.

Maybe these religious organizations should start paying some taxes before they think they can decide what is and isn’t covered by health care.

I think once you take a single cent of public money, you void your right to cry about you religious views. Take government money, follow the law.

Abortifacients is the correct scientific term. Cringing at it is like cringing at the word vagina. However, oral contraceptives, even Plan B, are not abortifacients.

The argument I keep returning to is this: You are already paying for the birth control no matter what. What you are actually arguing is about what part of your employees compensation they use to pay for their birth control. Do you want them to use the part of compensation you provide via health benefits or do you want them to use the part of compensation you provide via take-home pay?

What’s the next step? Are you going to go to the Supreme Court trying to block your employees from using their take-home pay to buy condoms or day-after-pills or even abortions?

      EXACTLY THIS!

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DICTATE WHAT YOUR EMPLOYEES USE THEIR COMPENSATION FOR.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TELL YOUR EMPLOYEES WHAT THEY CAN OR CANNOT SPEND THEIR PAYCHECK ON

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TELL YOUR EMPLOYEES WHAT DISEASES OR CONDITIONS THEY CAN OR CANNOT BE TREATED FOR

YOU JUST. PROVIDE. FUCKING. COMPENSATION. PERIOD.

Fuck all you can’t blame nuns. They’re nuns, not idiots. They were still educated right? Even if they read and believe the bible and they still supposedly have common sense. They know what contraception is and why.

How are they fighting against something if they don’t know what it is? That is no excuse. Especially for nuns, who are trusted by many women to give them the proper guidance. These women are fully complicit in this act. Let’s not pretend they’re cloistered and somehow only doing god’s duty without questioning why. They know why.

That’s nice and all that you’re saving it for Jesus, Girls, and sure you can 100% opt out of using yours, but you have no right to try to sabotage other women’s reproductive health or rights.

I have absolutely lost my tolerance for people who use religion as an excuse to not follow the laws of the land. I don't care what anyone worships, but religion should not excuse anyone from having to follow the law. Laws exist to give everyone (hypothetically) the same rights and make sure that we all play by the same rules. If you don't want to participate in the society, renounce your citizenship and all of its protections. You don't just get to opt out of the parts that you don't like because Sky Daddy told you to.

I’m actually fairly certain there’s something in the Bible about following the laws of the land too. To be fair, I am not a Bible scholar, and I think it’s vitally important for verses to be studied in their historical context, so it would require more research to say that this is what the Bible actually means, but Romans 13 has some great verses you can pull to make the case that Sky Daddy Approves the law of the land.

1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

The REALLY crazy part of this is that Roman Catholics have historically been opposed to birth control because it is birth control, not because it “causes abortions”.

I don’t agree with the whole argument, but at least it is honest and consistent.

So when Roman Catholics claim that they are opposed to birth control because it causes abortions, they aren’t just confused about what birth control actually does. They’re also replacing their own rich theological heritage with an argument that was basically made up five minutes ago to win over American evangelicals.

Pretty revealing, huh? They realized “no sex without babies” as they’d been selling it wasn’t flying with a large enough portion of the population anymore so they threw “but abortion!” in there to draw more support. Just shows they'll say whatever they think they have to.
