Republicans support local government, unless the local government is liberal, in which case they support states’ rights, unless the state is liberal, in which case they support federal power, unless the president is a liberal, in which case they support local government again.

Small government is for Real Americans. Everyone else gets the screws.

I know that even as polarized as our politics get, the people who live in their little political bubbles all view themselves as the good guys.

But how the everloving fuck do you think you are the good guy when you are trying to make sure people can’t afford to call in sick to work?

So much this. Years ago when I was working retail my boss got on my case because I had to take two days off of work due to a cold or flu. I didn’t bring in a doctor’s note because I didn’t go to the doctor. He said he would have to report me and asked why I didn’t go:
“Because after taxes I make about $50 a day and going to the doctor costs $120. It’s hard enough to pay rent, bills, and feed myself each month as it is, [boss’ name]. I can’t afford to lose out on $200 when I’m sick.”

Phoenix is always pulling this shit. They hate the liberal sections of the state — Tucson, the Navajo Nation, Sedona — so they shit on us with these nonsense blanket laws that strip our local sovereignty, then pat themselves on the back for creating conditions that make us a national laugingstock (see: Being sued by school districts for illegal underfunding, SB1070, publicly fellating Grover Norquist).

But they won’t vote them out of office at the state level. Why? Why are people so willing to get fucked in the ass by the private sector? Don’t you people want paid sick time? Wouldn’t you rather sick people stayed home and didn’t spread disease? Morons.

My state has more Democratic voters than Republican, but our legislature is Republican, and they have a super-majority. The governor is Republican. And the state Supreme Court has seven Republican jurists to one Democrat. They’ve got a stranglehold on state government because they’ve jerrymandered the voting districts so that massive amounts of Democrats are crammed into only a few districts. It’s virtually impossible for Democrats to make a comeback. Hopefully, the bipartisan commission we just approved will help re-balance the voting districts.

So I think in my case it’s likely that a majority of people do want change, and they are voting, but the system is rigged to minimize their vote and maximize others’.

I’ve seriously fucking had it with state governments. Their whole existence is centered around the the rich and special interests using them as a tool to get around federal laws that they find don’t fit their view of society should be run. Most of the laws states pass these days consist of 1. making sure money stays in the hands of the few and 2. making discrimination against groups legal.

As far as I’m concerned, state governments are a middle man, and a big scam, between the federal government and local municipalities that should be done away with.

It’s the United States of America. One nation. One set of laws. Fuck all this “States’ Rights” bullshit that applied 200 years ago when states were reliant on more independent control because of a variety of factors that no longer apply.

Tear down these state Capitol buildings and make all these governors and worthless state reps actually have to work for a living at something else besides fucking the living shit out of people.

    How’s THAT for smaller government.

Yeah, people need to pay attention to state governments instead of just obsessing about presidential politics. ALEC has been colonizing the state legislatures for years and this is how we end up with states like Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan and Wisconsin devolving to third world conditions. It’s also MUCH easier and cheaper to buy a state legislator than a U.S. Senator or Representative.

      Bingo!

ALEC and company have realize that people are pretty damn ignorant about state governments compared to their knowledge of the federal government, so they’ve funneled their resources there and have done a damn good job at using state laws to enact their own neanderthal agendas.

You’re right about state reps too. US Reps and Senators get a fair amount of attention and scrutiny, even from people who may not be their constituents. As a result they usually have to be pretty qualified to run for their jobs and have to watch their asses about getting in trouble for corruption.

OTOH so few people give a shit about state reps and senators that some of the dumbest and most corrupt people can easily win the office with the backing of a few important individuals and, once elected, they can be bought off for far less with a lot less possibility of it coming to light.

Fucking state governments are just a bunch of sociopaths who don’t want to live by the laws of the US government so they make up shit to get around it, usually at the expense vast majority of the state’s residents. Although many of them are too stupid to realize they’re being had and vote for these assholes anyway.

Republican state legislatures are the worst. Some legislator tried this shit here in Michigan if any additional cities tried to pass non-discrimination ordinances. Luckily, that shit died on the vine because the governor would have almost certainly vetoed it.

Republicans are always screaming about “local control!”...until they do something they don’t like.

This was a similar take I read recently on Flint. The Clean Water Act, limits the role of the EPA to act, in deference to state authorities. Yet, in the hearing last week with Snyder and the EPA head, every Republican blamed the EPA, despite the fact the EPA was following the Clean Water Act. It was jaw dropping how immune to logic those Reps were.

Not just that, but the Republicans have been trying to kill the EPA for decades. To watch that spectacle they put on was truly laughable. Had the EPA barged in sooner they’d be screaming about them having usurped local control. I kind of wish they had since that’s what the fucknuts believe anyway, and hopefully they’ve learned to always air on the side of children in the future. A huge part of the problem is that they’ve essentially been politically cowed by conservatives, so they are reticent to extend themselves on anything, even things that may look right off the bad as crises.

I haves an idea: Let's just defund EVERYTHING and let them collect all tax revenue into their personal bank accounts... that's really all they fucking want. Further: GOD DAMMIT with fast food workers being forced to work with a contagious virus..... this is THE most infuriating thing about this kind of fucking mess. I come into my closed-to-the-public office with colds routinely and cough and sneeze all over my own shit that no one else will ever touch. Hospitality workers???? STAY.THE.FUCK.HOME. THIS is why we need employers to step up to the goddamned plate and quit threatening sick-call-outers with firing.. it should be illegal to discipline a food worker for calling out sick. IDGAF if they're famous for hangover call-in.... fire the fucker then. DO NOT come into work with the flu, norovirus, colds, strep throat, diahhrea, etc.. if you're handling food. Holy shit. And yes, it seems absolutely necessary to cover times like these because unless we want sick fast food workers spreading the fucking plague all over everyone's burgers, we should probably compensate the fact that they SHOULD be staying home while sick but then getting a $75.00 paycheck for the whole week leaves them short on bills. It sucks that legislation like this is necessary in the first place, but again, asking a corporation to act like a compassionate human being by providing a living wage seems... daunting a little, eh?

Tip math is NOT my friend, so I always just go for broke and try to make the server jump for joy after I leave, if they were at least decent. Never mind that's something their own fucking employer should be doing in the first place... whole 'nother can o worms there. And yes, I think food workers coming in with illnesses because they're threatened otherwise is complete and utter bullshit. I had the pleasure of norovirus spreading through my whole family last week, and it was a fucking nightmare. The universe is lucky I cannot pinpoint the culprit, because I'd lay my wrath down. These people do not realize or don't give a flying fuck just how badly ONE virus spreading can affect and greatly inconvenience entire towns full of people. Seriously. Fuck. Rage.
