I read a fascinating article in The Atlantic about how this all really happened because President Obama shook Raul Castro’s hand at Nelson Mandela’s funeral. I had no idea Mandela and the Castro brothers were friends, nor how much Cuba supported the Anti-Apartheid movement.

But that’s besides the point. The fact that Obama said, “I would never embarrass the Mandela family by causing an incident, I will shake his hand” and began to bridge this almost century-long rift is proof of the kind of diplomacy, class, and elegance than we won’t see in the White House again for a long time, I’m afraid. I was very proud of my president after reading that.

The article said they were stagnant, and focused on prisoner exchange. It wasn't until Castro saw that Obama was a different kind of president that he opened the door for talks - this grew from that.

This is a historic moment not soon to be forgotten. I wish we could have him for 4 more years.

And have a democratic Senate. (Or house).

Going from a young good looking family to Hill and frail Bill is going to be depressing to say the least.

I’ve no shame in admitting that as an admirer of both the Castro brothers and Obama, this is probably my favorite part of his presidency. The fact that an island nation 90 miles off our coast line has been under embargo since the Kennedy administration is an embarrassment for both sides.

The Castro should have been willing to make the concessions to get this done decades ago and the USA should have been eager to help. We’d only fucked up their country for the 50 years prior to the Castro regime anyway. Why not mend those fences?

Yeah, me too. My great-grandmother moved to the US with my grandmother and her siblings in the early 1950s. I definitely wouldn’t be here had my great-grandmother not made such a brave decision. People who only think of the political issues without understanding the very real human suffering that did and still does exist in Cuba is naïve and should be ashamed.

    *Not a US citizen.

Is this sort of consiliatory acticvity something your right wing media blowholes will tout as another sign that you current president is a weak, rubber necked disgrace who spends all his time taking it up the ass abroad instead of ...making America great again.

Because for me as an outsider looking in this is the sort of thing that makes the world a better place for everyone. You should be proud.

Yay! Thank you! I think a lot of us are very proud, I know I am anyway. President Obama recently gave an interview to NPR where he talked about the US and strength, and discussed that so many people in the government or running to be in the government see strength as a function of where is o military, and what are they doing. He discussed the different types of strength, leadership, and power the US can have, and that it also means diplomacy and leading as an example. Here, it isn’t exactly radical, because of course everyone else has had pretty good relations with Cuba for the past sixty years, but I think it is leadership in the sense that he is making friends with people we used to think of as enemies, he is offering an olive branch, and hopefully the cultural exchange that will come from this will improve all of our lives.

You know our country very well!!

Yes, the people will common sense will see this as a good thing. The fastest way to change Cuba, in my opinion, is to open our relationship with them and share our culture. American culture seems to be contagious, and if we want them to abandon communism, our culture may be the fastest (and most peaceful) means to do that.
Regardless, we can get more done together than through a closed door.

and yes, the more paranoid fear/mongering ring wing people will see this as a sign of weakness, as they see any and all diplomacy and compromise done by an opponent.

Gone? Fidel has been retired for...ten years? And Raul has long planned to retire at the end of his current term. The rest of the government isn’t going anywhere.

OK so the President’s wife is refereed to as the First Lady, yes?

If Hillary wins, we would have to come up with a new title for a husband? Or do we keep calling Bill the First Lady?

What would it be? The First Husband? (fitting, cause technically he would be the FIRST husband) the First Fella? First Dudemeister? First Gentleman?

I feel like First Gentleman is the general public consensus.

I like to picture small committee of etiquette experts holding meetings with lots of very polite but very passionate discussions on this very topic.
