That’s what happens when you don’t invest in infrastructure, all you little SF techno-libertarians.

Maybe they could’ve invested in it if a lot of the SF area companies actually paid tax.

And you bet your sweet bippie that intern is unpaid but had to have 2-3 years experience plus a degree to get that “job.”

I like it, but really, everyone working for the city in SF is full time with bad-ass benefits and pensions.

All our efforts are focused on resolving the electrical issues right now- apologies for all the trouble.

    ...

Planners in 1996 had no way of predicting the tech boom

Yes, how could anyone in 1996 have known electricity would still be a big thing 20 years later? They’re not psychic!

Somewhere the Koch brothers and their ilk are having a good laugh while one half of the bay area blames the other for something their policy of austerity is directly to blame for.

They are not for austerity so much as they are for efficient use of funds. Something California doesn’t know how to do.

You sure ate your stupid flakes this morning. Everybody has a different idea of what would be “efficient” funding. So, sorry. You do not have an intelligent take on this topic.

All these billions of tech dollars for AI cars...

    But yet.

We just need functional mass transit.

I think this dialectic is present in many Bay Area issues.

That’s not gonna happen unless you close all the private schools in SF. SF’s schools are some of the most segregated schools in the country.

BTW, what’s really sad is that at least you guys have BART. Most other metropolitan areas in this country are lucky if they have a viable bus system with maybe a dinky light rail line or two thrown in for economic development. Where I’m originally from, we had two equally shitty bus system which didn’t coordinate with one another in any meaningful way with horrible service frequency and a near chronic level of service cuts.

We set up shit to fail in this country.

American public transport underdevelopment is only because your auto industry and petrol industry has a massive lobby. They don’t want you having public transportation. They want you having to use your cars every day, all day, so that you have to buy lots of gas all the time and wear out your cars so that you have to have them serviced and you have to buy lots of parts and more cars sooner than you would if you used public transport five days a week.

This comes down to a BART management problem. BART is funded by sales taxes and ridership fees. BART should have been assessing a property tax fee for the massive increase in value it generates for land owners who own property near BART stations. It’s authorized to do this but doesn’t because big business has resisted it and they have all the clout.

I somehow doubt that would result in the kind of revenue to fill these gaps. Not that I disagree with the concept, but I’d bet this isn’t a whole lot of revenue relative to the overall budget. Could be totally wrong, though.

I’m glad they don’t sugar coat this shit but how about start fixing the problem by having the mega-techno-businesses start paying their taxes to improve the infrastructure instead of offshoring their profits to Ireland.

Their taxes don’t fund BART. So, even if they started paying them, it wouldn’t do BART much good - although other people/agencies would benefit.
