He says he’s filing the lawsuit in pro-se, but personally I think it’s poetry.

“I am suing Uber Technologies for $10,000,000.00 million dollars.”

This is my favorite part. Strong opening. Lots of extra words and punctuation in there to unpack.

I thought the “Uber is Satan” thing was just trying for an insanity defense or incompetence finding, but, uh, this is pretty out there.

Well, here’s a thought, at the risk of playing armchair psychologist. By all accounts, this guy was normal up to the night of the shooting. He had just started working with Uber when the shootings took place, and in between shootings he was still capable of taking fares around.

So I’m going to go with the idea that this guy was either medicated before moonlighting with Uber, then stopped (antidepressants and antipsychotics don’t mix with working at night), or that upon taking up night work he started using stimulants (anything from adderal up to meth). I suspect the latter, because there’s a combination of paranoia and elevated lucidity.

In either event, he could have precipitated acute psychosis by monkeying around with meds. Which invites the question, did he do so while competent enough to understand that monkeying with meds leads to dangerous situations? Because then an insanity defense doesn’t stick.

Also, while Dalton may be loony now, he can and will be forcibly medicated if it makes him competent to stand trial.

I mean, I’m not saying this is definitely what happened with this guy, but when my cousin developed schizophrenia, it was pretty much like a switch had been flipped. She seemed normal and then all of a sudden she wasn’t. She was in her early 20s at the time which is far more common, but it’s not unheard of for older people.

Murder spree aside, he might not be entirely wrong about Uber.

Remember, guns are never the problem, religion is.

If you can’t blame religion, blame foreigners.

If you can’t blame foreigners, blame Obama.

If you can’t blame Obama, blame big business.

    And so on.

It’s the intersection between guns and paranoid delusional dudes that should bother us. I can’t imagine a new gun regulation could stop a spree killing like this one. We really do need to address the mental impairment angle as well.

Sure it could. That new gun regulation would be take everybody’s goddamn guns away and lock up anyone found with one for life.

If you replace all instances of “Uber” in his letter with “Obama”, you will get a peek inside the mind of every conservative wing nut.

Nice “journalism” Gawker! He says right there in the letter that it’s 10,000,000 million which is ten trillion. Does Gawker even factcheckanymorehulkmaniaberniebromoylanwasatwatbringbackrichardlawson?

There are tax consequences to punitive damages. I wonder if he discussed this with his accountant prior to filing the suit.
