Ah, yes. It’s all about sex. The same way women’s organizations sit around talking about vaginas and minority groups get together to compare skin color.

The people that hear “Gay-Straight Alliance” and start foaming at the mouth have no desire to “protect” children or talk about positive values. It’s 2016, kids aren’t dumb, they know you don’t actually care about them and are using them as a front for your ignorance. There are so many extraordinarily useless people in the world.

They tend to attract kids that are troubled for other reasons.

Yes, asshole. They’re typically troubled because of people like you.

What? I thought womens’ groups just sat around talking about how they “want the D” and how facials aren’t at all degrading?

You mean... they think they’re people?

Southern Indiana has managed to escape being the horrifically and virulently evangelical and antigay branding that has hit states that are louder about it, but I went to high school in Columbus, IN; there are some fucking freakshows down there.

Never forget that Martinsville, IN is one of the last bastions of overt white supremacy in the country.

Our high school football team played an away game against Martinsville in the 80s. The African American kids were told not to go to the rest rooms alone. Ah, Martintucky.

A freind went to New Palestine. He told me thier mascot is the Red Dragon and the KKK donated the land for the high school with the stipulation that the mascot never be changed. Seems like it could have happened but never heard anyone else talk about it.

      Thoughts?

fears that the GSA will be used to recruit children

I know that the “homophobes are closet gays” trope is overused and unhelpful. But. But! If you are worried about gays “recruiting” people, it has to be because you are a little worried that they could successfully recruit you, doesn’t it?

I think it is incredibly sad that we live in a society where people feel the need to form groups like the GSA. I think it is utterly pathetic that there are people that feel threatened by groups like the GSA.

For white, male, heterosexual, Christians the 1950's were practically a utopia. White men controlled all aspects of government, African-Americans were in their ‘place’, gay people were in the closet, transsexuals were unknown, women were not ‘liberated’ and not competing for their jobs, abortion was illegal, almost all white men had a decent job, and America was the “Leader of the Free World.” The only negatives for them were ‘world communism’ (and its ‘infiltration’ in the U.S.) and the emerging counterculture ‘beatniks’, but they were confident those threats could be defeated in time (beatniks were considered an annoyance more than a real threat, but the next decade would show how strong the counterculture movement would become). What they cannot appreciate is that for many people their ‘utopia’ was a horrific dystopia—full of intolerance, repression, and fear...

If you look at what’s happened since then, it is a nightmare scenario for white, male, heterosexual, Christians (and the women who support that worldview). Every social change has seen them lose their power and privilege, and at this point their jobs are either under attack or have already been shipped overseas. They have been at the breaking point for some time, and any further change could send them over the edge. For some it was gay marriage, for others it’s transsexuals using ‘normal’ bathrooms, for many it was a black man in the ‘White’ House. Perhaps the biggest tipping point is when their own children embrace ‘progressive’ behavior—such as starting a club which ‘legitimizes’ homosexuality in their local school...

For white, male, heterosexual, Christians these are the End Times—not that they expect a literal Last Judgement to occur, but that for them our current society is a Hell on Earth compared to the ‘utopia’ they remember (or imagine). Furthermore, they now believe they have been scammed by the very politicians they sent to Washington to restore white, male, heterosexual, Christian values. The fact that they are now a minority which cannot easily impose their values on the rest of society is lost on them. Thus, they’re angry enough to support a lunatic like Trump for President—in the desperate hope that he can somehow take our society back to a ‘better’ time...

“It’s horrifying that a club whose egalitarian and pacifist mission is in its very name is inspiring such furor in people who have zero grasp on gay lives to the extent that they don’t even understand the concept of gay culture or how their bigotry contributes to it.”

There it is. My favorite word so overused by Gawker writers for things that are demonstrably not horrifying that its lost all meaning.

(Please note this not a commentary on the subject, because the whole scenario is ridiculous and I agree with Rich completely, solely a comment on the use of the word “horrifying” to describe literally anything that any author finds wrong with a subject)

Mmm.... I dunno. I’m legit scurred that people like this exist, that's for damn sure. Horrified might be stretching it, but think of the implications and how badly this sort of bullshit rhetoric can affect LGBT lives, directly or indirectly... I've known more than one gay person who's taken their life due to non-acceptance. That IS horrifying, and this is absolutely promoting it. Kinda just sick.
